Per multiple reports, Doug Martin, a former star running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Boise State Broncos, died at the age of 36.
The cause of death has not yet been revealed.
Per a statement by Martin’s family via Greg Auman of Fox Sports:
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
“Terrible to think the Bucs lost Vincent Jackson at 38 and now Doug Martin at 36,” added Auman. “Two absolute stars a decade ago, gone too soon.”
The Buccaneers selected Martin with the No. 31 pick in the 2012 draft. He earned All-Pro honors in 2015 and made two Pro Bowl appearances in 2012 and 2015.
Martin played seven seasons in the NFL, appearing in 84 games and starting in 74 games. He rushed for 5,356 yards and 30 touchdowns. He added another 1,207 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the passing game.
Martin last played in the league during the 2018 season for the Oakland Raiders. He was released by the Raiders with an injury settlement in 2019 after dealing with a shoulder injury.
Martin was a standout at Boise State, rushing for 3,431 yards and 63 touchdowns on 613 carries. He earned MVP of the 2011 Maaco Bowl Las Vegas when he rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown. Martin returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in Boise State’s 56-24 win over Arizona State.
Following reports of his death, fans took to social media to remember the life of Martin and send condolences to the family.
“Rest in Peace. Doug was one my favorite player growing up very sad day for tampa bay,” wrote a fan.
“Wow. That's awful. Condolences to the family,” posted another.
