Aston Villa star shows off gruesome injury after X-rated rant at official

Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne is simply built different.

In the second half of Villa's trip to Tottenham on Sunday, the left-back was left writhing in agony after a challenge from Kevin Danso inside the box.

Although Danso won the ball, he clattered into Digne's ankle on the follow-through and left more than a scratch on the France international.

Despite the challenge and the pleas of Villa captain John McGinn, referee Simon Hooper remained unmoved as Digne remained in serious discomfort.

Given he needed attention from Villa's medical staff, Digne had to briefly exit the field before he returned.

Luckily for Dinge, he would have the last laugh over Danso.

The 32-year-old showed off remarkable athleticism to control an inch-perfect pass from Matty Cash high up the right side of the field.

Digne then popped the ball into the path of Emi Buendia, who cut inside and fired past Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from the edge of the box with a stunning strike.

It proved to be the winner as Villa beat Tottenham 2-1.

Why Digne let rip at fourth official after being subbed off

As for Digne, his afternoon came to an early end when Villa boss Unai Emery took him off for fellow left-back Ian Maatsen in the 82nd minute.

Even though his match had finished, Digne's frustration at Danso escaping punishment for the ugly challenge boiled over.

Digne kicked the back of a chair on the bench before he stood up and yelled at fourth official Anthony Taylor.

The defender then beckoned Taylor to move closer and look at his ankle, but the latter remained unmoved.

Digne continued to vent his frustration, although Spurs fans in the vicinity of his X-rated rant were less than enthused.

However, those same supporters may have been more sympathetic towards Digne's anger once the French star shared a picture of the damage sustained from Danso's challenge.

In an Instagram story, Digne showed the gruesome gash on his ankle while it was tended to by a medical staff member.

Digne added the caption: "No pain no gain."

It's not the first time Digne has played through the pain barrier for Villa this term.

During Villa's scoreless draw against Everton in September, Digne's head collided with a stray knee while attempting to scramble the ball away inside the box.

Shortly after he sat up following the incident, cameras captured a golf ball-sized welt that had emerged above his right eye.

Remarkably, Digne played on having been checked over by Villa's medical staff.
