Knicks Cut Ties with 2 Former Lakers Ahead of Opening Night

The New York Knicks have announced a flurry of moves with just a few days remaining until the start of the 2025-26 NBA season, which tips off on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

New York has waived non-guaranteed training camp signings Alex Len, Garrison Mathews, and Matt Ryan.

It appears that the Knicks have set their lineup as they prepare to start their season against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Ryan, a 28-year-old small forward, logged 19 games with the Knicks last season, putting up 1.5 points per game in just 3.6 minutes per contest. He made his first NBA appearance with the Boston Celtics at the end of the 2021-22 regular season, and split time with the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves the following season.

Ryan averaged 5.4 points in 13.9 minutes per game as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans over the course of the 2023-24 season before finding his way to New York last year.

Len, a 32-year-old center, spent the first five seasons of his career with the Phoenix Suns after being drafted No. 5 overall by them in 2013. He then made stops with the Atlanta Hawks, the Sacramento Kings, the Toronto Raptors, the Washington Wizards, the Kings again, and - after the Lakers’ trade for Hornets’ big man Mark Williams fell through - he inked a deal with LA last season.

Mathews, who will be 29 later this month, lost the battle for the final roster spot against Landry Shamet.

He was also battling Malcolm Brogdon for that spot, but after his surprising retirement announcement on Wednesday, it came down to the two veterans.

Mathews started his NBA career as a member of the Washington Wizards for two seasons before making his way to the Houston Rockets. He spent a full year in H-Town and then headed to the Atlanta Hawks in the middle of the 2022-23 campaign, where he played until last season.

Mathews, a career 38.2 percent 3-point shooter on 3.9 tries a night, can still collect attention from another franchise, and recently spoke on how he can disrupt a game.

"I bring a lot of spacing, and hopefully my space can help," Mathews said via Stefan Bondy. "Some of these guys get downhill. We've got great ball handlers on the team. So just the gravity I pull from defenders, hopefully it can help those guys out a little bit."
