Easily the worst thing about being a West Ham fan is the London Stadium. While an impressive venue, it’s not built for football and that’s reflected in the awful atmosphere.
Although some of the responsibility of making that atmosphere falls on the fans, the logistics of the ground make it extremely difficult.
The seats being miles away from the pitch makes it one of the least threatening venues in England, while the gap between the stands make it impossible to get chants going half the time.
However, one small change that’s been suggested is painting the seats claret. This would have a positive impact in a number of ways. Firstly it wouldn’t be glaringly obvious whenever there’s an empty seat. It would also make it feel more like home rather than a generic stadium. Finally the darker colours would make it feel more closed in, creating a bit more hostile for the opposition.
These sort of small changes are exactly what are needed, and they could end up adding up to some significant increases in fan satisfaction.
