Final score: Chiefs defeat Raiders 31-0

The [Kansas City Chiefs](http://www.arrowheadpride.com/)‘ fans have been waiting a long time to find out what the team’s offense would look like with wide receivers Rahsee Rice, Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy available at the same time. On Sunday afternoon, at least, it looked amazing – as did the team’s defense – in a 31-0 beatdown of the [Las Vegas Raiders](http://www.silverandblackpride.com/) on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Las Vegas opened the game with a promising start but ultimately stalled just outside field goal range. Running back Ashton Jeanty picked up three yards on first down, and quarterback Geno Smith followed with a short pass to wide receiver Tre Tucker for a ten-yard gain to midfield. Smith then connected with tight end Cameron Runyon for three more yards, setting up second-and-7 at the Kansas City 46.

After an incomplete pass to wideout DeMario Thornton, the Raiders appeared to convert on third-and-7 with a 13-yard gain to the 33. However, a holding penalty on offensive lineman Jarrett Powers-Johnson wiped out the play. On third-and-17, Smith found tight end Michael Mayer for a ten-yard pickup, but it wasn’t enough to move the chains.

Punter AJ Cole pinned the Chiefs deep, angling a 38-yard kick out of bounds at the 8-yard line with 11:52 left in the first quarter.

Kansas City marched 92 yards in nine plays to open the scoring, capping the drive with a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to wide receiver Rashee Rice.

The possession began at the Chiefs’ 8-yard line following a punt, and quickly ran into trouble after an offensive holding call backed them up to first-and-20. On the very next play, Mahomes delivered a 44-yard strike to tight end Travis Kelce, who was forced out at the Las Vegas 40. He followed that with short completions to running back Brashard Smith and tight end Noah Gray, the latter gaining 28 yards down the left sideline to move Kansas City inside the ten.

From there, running back Isiah Pacheco added a short gain up the middle, and Mahomes hit Rice for back-to-back completions — the second a quick slant over the middle for the score on first-and-goal from the 2. Las Vegas was flagged for a face mask on the play, which was enforced on the ensuing kickoff.

Kicker Harrison Butker converted the extra point, giving Kansas City a 7–0 lead with just over six minutes left in the first quarter. Running back Kareem Hunt was shaken up on the touchdown play and is being evaluated on the sideline.

Las Vegas opened its second drive with a shaky start and couldn’t recover, punting again after a brief series extended by penalty. The possession began at the Raiders’ 35-yard line, but a mishandled snap led to a fumble by quarterback Geno Smith, which he recovered for a two-yard loss. On second down, Smith missed wide receiver Tre Tucker on a short right throw, and on third-and-12, the quarterback was sacked by Kansas City defensive end Charles Omenihu for a nine-yard loss. However, the play was negated by an illegal contact penalty against cornerback Trent McDuffie, giving Las Vegas a fresh set of downs.

Even with the reprieve, the Raiders couldn’t capitalize. Smith hit Tucker for no gain on first down, followed by a short two-yard catch by running back Raheem Mostert. On third-and-8, wide receiver Jacob Bech picked up six yards along the sideline, but the offense stayed on the field and tried to draw Kansas City offside before punting on fourth-and-2. AJ Cole flipped the field with a 49-yard punt, and Niko Remigio returned it 11 yards to the Chiefs’ 16-yard line.

Kansas City put together another efficient scoring drive, marching 84 yards in 17 plays and finishing with an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to wide receiver Hollywood Brown. The possession spanned the end of the first quarter and bled nearly seven minutes off the clock in the second.

The Chiefs converted multiple key downs along the way. On third-and-2, Mahomes hit wide receiver Rashee Rice for seven yards to keep the chains moving. Running back Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt shared the backfield duties, with Hunt converting two fourth-and-short situations, including a three-yard gain to the Kansas City 43 as the first quarter expired.

Early in the second, Mahomes found running back Smith for a nine-yard pickup and connected with Xavier Worthy for a 15-yard catch-and-run to the Las Vegas 3-yard line. A false start pushed Kansas City back to the 8, but Mahomes quickly made up for it, hitting Brown in the right flat for the score on second-and-8.

Kicker Harrison Butker added the extra point, giving Kansas City a 14–0 lead with 9:20 left in the second quarter. Hunt, who had briefly exited earlier in the game, returned during the drive and contributed a key third-down run.

Las Vegas started its third possession with solid field position at its own 37-yard line after a 36-yard kick return by running back Raheem Mostert, but the drive sputtered and ended in another punt.

Running back Ashton Jeanty opened the series with a two-yard gain up the middle, then broke off an eight-yard run around the left end — but that gain was erased by an offensive offside penalty on wide receiver Jacob Bech. On second-and-13, Jeanty found a crease for eight more yards, setting up third-and-5, but quarterback Geno Smith’s scramble came up short, gaining just one yard before he was stopped by defensive end George Karlaftis.

Punter AJ Cole launched a 46-yard kick to the Kansas City 11. Returner Niko Remigio muffed the catch but recovered his own fumble, then was immediately dropped at the 6-yard line by wide receiver Deonte Richardson, who flew down in coverage.

Kansas City closed their first half with another precise two-minute drill, marching 64 yards in 11 plays and finishing with a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to wide receiver Rashee Rice — his second score of the day.

Starting at the Las Vegas 36 following a short punt, Mahomes overcame a second-and-14 by hitting wide receiver Smith-Schuster for a 19-yard gain on third down. A one-yard run by Smith and a 12-yard catch by Smith-Schuster moved the ball to the 4-yard line with under 30 seconds to play.

The Chiefs used all three timeouts during the final sequence, allowing Mahomes to keep the offense in rhythm. After a short loss and an incompletion, Kansas City benefited from a defensive penalty on safety Jeremy Chinn for illegal contact on third down, giving Mahomes another chance. On first-and-goal from the 3, Mahomes fired quickly to Rice in the flat, who secured the touchdown with just 13 seconds remaining.

Kicker Harrison Butker’s extra point extended the lead to 21–0 heading into halftime.

Las Vegas took over with just ten seconds remaining in the half and opted to keep it simple. Running back Jeanty took a handoff up the middle for a six-yard gain to the 41-yard line before time expired. The Raiders head to the locker room trailing Kansas City 21–0.

Kansas City picked up right where it left off, opening the second half with a methodical nine-play, 55-yard touchdown drive that stretched the lead to 28–0.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes mixed the short passing game with effective runs by Brashard Smith and running back Isiah Pacheco. The biggest scare came early, when wide receiver Brown fumbled after a seven-yard gain on third-and-1, but Xavier Worthy was in the right place to recover at the Las Vegas 41 and advanced it three more yards.

From there, Mahomes found Worthy for 12 yards to the 15, then Smith gained eight on a run off the right edge. On second-and-2 from the 7-yard line, Pacheco broke through left tackle untouched for a touchdown. Las Vegas had too many men on the field during the play, but Kansas City declined the penalty.

Harrison Butker’s extra point was good, pushing the Chiefs’ lead to four touchdowns with 9:05 remaining in the third quarter.

Las Vegas opened the second half with a short and ineffective possession, going three-and-out and losing yards in the process. Starting at their own 35-yard line, running back Jeanty managed two modest carries up the middle for a combined two yards. On third-and-8, quarterback Smith dropped back but was quickly brought down for a five-yard loss by Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones.

AJ Cole’s punt traveled 41 yards and went out of bounds at the Kansas City 27, but an unnecessary roughness penalty on cornerback Nohl Williams added 13 yards to the end of the play. The Chiefs took over at their own 40 with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter.

Kansas City padded its lead with a 38-yard field goal from kicker Harrison Butker, capping a 10-play, 55-yard drive that stalled in the red zone. The Chiefs now lead 31–0 with 2:41 left in the third quarter.

The possession began at the Kansas City 17-yard line. Running back Isiah Pacheco picked up eight combined yards on two carries to set up third-and-2, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes converted with a short run by Pacheco to the 25. Two plays later, Mahomes took a deep shot down the left sideline and found wide receiver Tyquan Thornton for a 39-yard gain, flipping the field and placing the ball at the Las Vegas 36.

Rookie Xavier Worthy added a 13-yard end-around to move inside the 25, but the Chiefs’ offense stalled from there. Mahomes missed wide receiver Rashee Rice on first down, found tight end Travis Kelce for a short three-yard gain, then fired incomplete toward Hollywood Brown on third-and-7. Butker came on and drilled the kick to extend the lead.

Las Vegas moved the chains once but ultimately came up short on fourth down after a promising gain was erased by a costly penalty. The drive began at the Raiders’ 35-yard line following Kansas City’s field goal. Quarterback Geno Smith hit wide receiver DeMario Thornton for a 12-yard gain, but the play was wiped out by a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on offensive lineman Stone Forsythe.

Backed up to first-and-25, Smith went to wide receiver Tre Tucker on back-to-back short throws, gaining nine yards total. On third-and-16, running back A.J. Jeanty took a checkdown and rumbled for 13 yards to bring up fourth-and-3. Smith looked back to Thornton on the next play, but the short right pass fell incomplete with just 12 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Chiefs will take over with strong field position and a 31–0 lead heading into the fourth.

With a 31–0 lead to start the fourth quarter, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and several offensive starters called it a day as backup Gardner Minshew took over under center. Kansas City opened the drive at the Las Vegas 41-yard line and leaned on the run game to chew clock.

Brashard Smith and Isiah Pacheco combined for modest gains to reach the 37, but a false start by Pacheco pushed the offense back to third-and-11. After a four-yard carry to set up fourth down, the Chiefs brought out punter Matt Araiza, who dropped a 29-yard kick inside the 10-yard line. Linebacker Leo Chenal downed it at the Raiders’ 9 with 13:23 left in regulation.

With the game out of reach, the Raiders’ offense continued to struggle. Starting at their own 8-yard line after a Chiefs punt, Las Vegas briefly moved the ball with a 14-yard pass from quarterback Geno Smith to wide receiver Tre Tucker. But a holding penalty on guard Alex Cappa wiped out the gain and backed the Raiders up to their own 12.

From there, the drive unraveled. Smith threw three straight incompletions — two short left and one deep shot intended for wide receiver DeMario Thornton — with defensive lineman Mike Danna applying pressure on third down.

Punter AJ Cole flipped the field with a booming 63-yard punt to the Kansas City 25. Niko Remigio returned it seven yards to the 32, where the Chiefs’ offense will take over with just under 12 minutes remaining.

With backup quarterback Gardner Minshew still in and a commanding 31–0 lead, Kansas City leaned heavily on the ground game to drain clock. Running back Smith handled every touch on the drive, carrying the ball seven straight times.

The Chiefs picked up one first down early with an eight-yard gain on third-and-4, but the drive stalled near midfield after a trio of short runs. On fourth-and-6 from the 50-yard line, punter Matt Araiza came on and delivered a 36-yard kick that was fair caught by wide receiver Alex Bachman at the Las Vegas 14-yard line.

Just over seven minutes remain as the Chiefs continue to control field position and the pace of the game.

Las Vegas handed the ball right back on the first play of its drive. Quarterback Kenny Pickett, who replaced Geno Smith late in the fourth quarter, mishandled the snap on first-and-10 from the 14-yard line. The fumble was recovered by Chiefs defensive tackle Jerry Tillery at the Raiders’ 11-yard line with 7:08 to play.

Kansas City takes over already in scoring position, looking to add to its 31–0 lead.

Taking over at the Las Vegas 11-yard line after a fumbled snap, Kansas City kept the ball on the ground but couldn’t punch it in, turning it over on downs inside the 5.

Running back Smith carried on all four plays of the short-field possession. He picked up three yards on first down and was stopped for a one-yard loss on second. On third-and-8, Smith powered forward for four yards, setting up fourth-and-4. The Chiefs kept the offense on the field, but Smith was stopped again, gaining only one yard up the middle before linebacker Divine Deablo and safety Ernest Roberts brought him down.

The Raiders took over at their own 4-yard line with 4:52 remaining. Safety Isaiah Pola-Mao exited with an injury earlier in the series.

Backed up inside their own 5-yard line after a turnover on downs, Las Vegas picked up one first down but failed to sustain the drive. Quarterback Kenny Pickett, working behind a reserve-heavy offensive line, connected with wide receiver Jacob Bech for a seven-yard gain on first down. Running back Dylan Laube followed with two short runs, bringing up third-and-2 from the 12.

On the next play, Pickett hit Laube in the right flat, but the rookie was stopped just shy of the sticks. Facing fourth-and-1 from the 13, the Raiders sent out punter AJ Cole, who launched a 44-yard kick that bounced out of bounds at the Kansas City 43 with 2:44 to play.

With a 31–0 lead and just over two minutes remaining, backup quarterback Gardner Minshew led the Chiefs into victory formation. Kansas City took over at its own 43-yard line and kneeled three times, running the clock down to under 40 seconds before punting on fourth down.

Punter Matt Araiza sent a 40-yard kick to the Las Vegas 20, where Alex Bachman returned it six yards to the 26 before being wrapped up by linebacker Leo Chenal and defensive back Jaylen Hicks.

The Raiders took over for one final play as the clock wound to a dominant 31–0 win for Kansas City.
