Ruben Amorim reacts after his Manchester United side made it back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time in his tenure with a 2-1 win at Liverpool

Ruben Amorim admits his Manchester United side had “a bit of luck” in handing Liverpool a fourth successive defeat. Harry Maguire struck with six minutes remaining after Cody Gakpo had equalised a controversial early opener from Bryan Mbeumo.
Gakpo had earlier hit the post three times while Liverpool wasted a number of other inviting openings, with Alexander Isak denied by new United goalkeeper Senne Lammens when clean through.
And Red Devils boss Amorim said: “I don’t have too many wins as United manager so this was really important to go back-to-back (after beating Sunderland last time out). It’s at Anfield so is really important.

“All the small things were perfect. It was really important for our fans, they struggled against Grimsby and Brentford and today they saw a different team.
“We came to the champions, the biggest rivals, so to see through the game was massive for us.
“Sometimes we had a bit of luck. They had two shots on the post that could change the narrative.
“We have to understand that but the goalkeeper showed a lot of character.”
Amorim added: “We started really well. We had a great spirit during the game. We didn’t play well with the ball at the moments we created chances. We suffered some chances also.
“We lost a little bit of composure in the second half. We managed well when we suffered the goal. That is a key point for our team. It was a great win, not a very well played game from our part but a great spirit.”
Maguire was close to leaving Old Trafford in recent years but was able to provide the winner having missed a late chance to secure victory in the last Anfield clash between the teams in January.
“It’s really important,” he said of Maguire’s comeback. “I have already spoken about that. We have a club that has a lot of pressure and it’s not easy to play here.
“Harry Maguire was really important for us today. He’s a great example, everything he has been through.”
United are now up to fourth and are only a point behind third-placed Liverpool. But Amorim has refused to entertain talk of Champions League qualification.
“I will not now increase the goal for this season,” he said. “We just need to win three games in a row. Forgot about the top four.
“We are thinking the same as 90 minutes ago. The way people see the team is different but we are the same team.”
