(Video): £19m man scores superb goal to remind Chelsea fans he exists

Omari Kellyman has had a tough time of it. Signed last summer for an obscene £19m (not his fault) he then spent the whole season injured (not his fault).

He became the symbol of the wasteful and seemingly pointless transfers being made by our sporting structure. He had become almost forgotten entirely by the start of this year, so small had his impact been.

But he’s been working his way back to fitness at Cardiff City on loan, and he scored his first goal for them yesterday.

It was a real beauty – jinking between players from the right wing he let off a fierce left footed shot that found the net. Speaking after the game, you could hear the relief in his voice.

“I had a tough season last year, so I’ve been trying to find my feet again, the attacking midfielder said.

“Coming here has been a step in the right direction. Today is the longest I have played in a game in a long time. Playing week in and week out is great and the confidence will come with that.”

Let’s hope that he can stay fit and keep scoring – this story which already looked certain to be a tragedy could yet turn around.

In other news…

Mike Penders is another young talent we’ve got out on loan, but he didn’t have such a good weekend as Kellyman. You can see our thoughts on his PSG mistake here.

Penders isn’t the only player to have struggled over the weekend – Jamie Gittens appeared in the second half for Chelsea and really struggled to get up to speed. Enzo Maresca had some interesting comments about him you can read here.
