Miguel Almiron forced to say 'I'm sorry' after leaving Newcastle for Atlanta United

Miguel Almiron has completed his first season back at Atlanta United after rejoining them from Newcastle United.

The Paraguayan ended his time with Newcastle United during the 2025 January transfer window, heading back to the MLS to play for Atlanta United.

Miguel Almiron’s Newcastle goodbye was an emotional one, as he was such a popular player within the dressing room. However, it was the right time to let him go. His exit gave the Magpies a PSR boost, with Almiron signing for Atlanta United for around £9.5million.

While Newcastle boosted their finances, Almiron joined a club where he was previously idolised. The 31-year-old helped Atlanta win the 2018 MLS Cup, and there was hope that he could propel them to similar glory upon his return.

However, that is not how things panned out.

Miguel Almiron says ‘sorry’ after poor Atlanta United campaign comes to an end

While the winner of the 2025 MLS Cup is yet to be determined, it will not be Almiron and co who hold the trophy high in the air.

That is because their campaign has now come to an end. After 34 league games, Atlanta United came 14th in the Eastern Conference.

They have not made it through to the playoffs, meaning they must now turn their attention towards the 2026 season.

Almiron, who scored six goals and provided four assists across 31 appearances, has issued an apology to supporters for how the season has gone via his official Instagram account.

He wrote: “Thank you to all the people in Atlanta for being with us all season. We felt your support every step of the way.

“I’m sorry we weren’t at the level this club, this city and you fans deserve. But we’ll come back stronger. We’re going to work harder than ever so next season is better for the club, for the fans and for Atlanta.

“We’ll do this together.”

Big 2026 on the horizon for Miguel Almiron

Miggy has already made it clear that he and his teammates will be working ‘harder than ever’ to ensure the 2026 season is much more memorable.

Regardless of whether that proves to be the case, 2026 is definitely going to be a year that the former Toon winger will never forget.

Almiron is going to the World Cup for the first time in his career, with Paraguay recently qualifying for the biggest tournament in world football.

It will be a huge moment for Almiron, who missed out on Newcastle United’s trophy celebrations earlier this year.

Eddie Howe’s side won the Carabao Cup in March, but Almiron had already left the club by then. However, because he had featured for Newcastle in the competition, Almiron did receive a medal.
