Opinion: Four Newcastle United players must now step up and solve Eddie Howe's concern

Newcastle United fell to defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion, with Eddie Howe left concerned over the reliance on Nick Woltemade.

The Amex Stadium is not a happy hunting ground for Newcastle United.

The Magpies lost 2-1 to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon, meaning it’s now nine Premier League visits to the Amex without a win.

Nick Woltemade’s cheeky finish lit up the game, but it wasn’t enough for Newcastle as Danny Welbeck’s brace handed Brighton the victory.

Newcastle United wingers must step up to help Nick Woltemade

Woltemade’s stunning form continues, with the German bagging his fourth goal in just five Premier League games.

Howe has admitted his concern, though, as Newcastle are becoming over-reliant on the German for goals.

Newcastle have scored just five goals since the 3-2 defeat against Liverpool, and Woltemade has scored four of them.

Other players need to chip in, and wingers must produce goals from wide areas when playing in a 4-3-3 system.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

Anthony Gordon, Anthony Elanga, Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes all have quality in their lockers, but the goals have been in short supply.

Gordon has scored three times in two Champions League games, but has drawn a blank in five Premier League outings.

It’s a similar story for Newcastle’s other wingers, with Elanga, Murphy and Barnes all waiting for their first goals this season.

Collectively, Newcastle’s wingers have played 1413 minutes of Premier League action without finding the net.

This simply cannot continue, and while Newcastle’s wingers can cause problems for any full-back, they must step up with more goals very soon.

Newcastle United left waiting for solution to Eddie Howe’s concern

Howe is looking for other Newcastle players to step up and help Woltemade in front of goal.

Newcastle wingers have that quality, but Howe will be desperate for Yoane Wissa’s return.

Wissa joined Newcastle on deadline day and was seen as a proven Premier League goalscorer who could help Woltemade during his transition to Premier League action.

Wissa is still out injured, though, and is unlikely to return until November.

The DR Congo international can play up front or out wide and should provide an enormous attacking boost.

Wissa may take some time to find his best form, but his record of 31 Premier League goals in the last two seasons suggests that he could be the answer.
