Nottingham Forest are closing in on Sean Dyche as their third managerial appointment of the season.

The former Everton and Burnley boss is in line to replace Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked less than 20 minutes after the final whistle of Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. Dyche’s appointment could be confirmed later today (Monday).

The former Reds youth player emerged as a potential candidate for the City Ground role during the international break. At the time, owner Evangelos Marinakis was considering his options as he weighed up whether to dismiss Postecoglou.

An eighth game without a win at the weekend proved to be the final straw for Postecoglou. And now Dyche is close to being announced as the 60-year-old’s replacement.

Forest did consider other names. Fulham’s Marco Silva is admired by Marinakis but compensation would be required to get him, and the Reds are mindful of keeping within the financial rules.

Talks were reportedly held with former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano posted on X on Sunday evening: “After talks in the last 24h, Roberto Mancini won’t become new Nottingham Forest manager at current stage. Despite discussions and negotiations, Forest and Mancini have not reached an agreement.”

The path is now clear for Dyche to pick up the reins. According to Sky Sports, he has ‘verbally agreed’ to take over and final details are in the process of being sorted.

If all goes to plan, Dyche’s first game in charge will be Thursday night’s Europa League clash at home to Porto. He will then quickly have a trip to the south coast to prepare for, with the Reds away to Bournemouth on Sunday.

Postecoglou’s tenure as Forest head coach was brought to an end after just 39 days. He had replaced Nuno Espirito Santo on September 9 and was axed on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds have not won in any competition since the opening day of the season, when Nuno was still in the dugout for a 3-1 victory over Brentford. They are 18th in the Premier League table with five points from their opening eight games.

Dyche has been out of work since leaving Everton in January. Ex-Reds Ian Woan and Steve Stone have long been part of his coaching staff and are likely to join him Trentside.
