Matthijs de Ligt has revealed that Manchester United knew to target Liverpool full-backs Milos Kerkez and Conor Bradley in their 2-1 victory at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds started well thanks to Amad's through ball down the right flank finding Bryan Mbeumo to lash home the opener. Cody Gakpo, who hit the woodwork three times during the match, equalised with 12 minutes remaining to seemingly turn the tide back in the host's favour.
However, Harry Maguire's late header restored United's advantage to secure a crucial win. After the game, De Ligt spoke to ViaPlay about two key areas the Reds were looking to exploit at Anfield.
"We knew that Liverpool had weaknesses, and that's their full-backs," he explained. "We were all really hyped, and the focus was very high. Today was a game that you really have to be concentrated."
United's game plan to focus on the full-backs worked with Bradley forced off on the hour mark as Arne Slot's team chased the match. Kerkez stayed on for the entirety of the encounter but was caught cold for Mbeumo's goal.
The result for United means they moved up to ninth in the Premier League table. They sit just two points outside the top four, having already faced four of the top five this campaign.
Next up for United is a clash with Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday. The Seagulls beat Newcastle 2-1 at the weekend with the Reds' ex-striker Danny Welbeck bagging the winning brace.
