And he was told to hurry up after the second.

Woltemade brought Toon level for a while with his clever back-heel flick to delight the Toon hordes in the South Stand.

The two were picked up by cameras having a hug and smile at full-time.

But their communication started before that – after Welbeck fired what proved to be the late winner from the edge of th box.

Welbeck said: “He was kind of telling me to hurry up after the second goal, to get back so they can restart.

“It's part of the game but it was nice to get the two goals and, most important, the three points puts us in a nice position going into next week.”

“We had a few words but it's football and there’s heated discussions, there's moments on the pitch where things are said.

“But it’s only football. Once the final whistle is blow, it's a bit of sportsmanship and's all it is.”

Welbeck twice scored winners for Albion at St James’s Park last season and has a little rivalry with Newcastle as a former Sunderland player.

There were suggestions Black Cats fans were singing his name during their own match against Wolves as news of events at the Amex came through.

Welbeck said: “Their fans have a little bit of banter with me during games.

“I’ve got a lot of love for the Stadium of Light and Sunderland as well. They played a massive part in my development as a youngster coming through.”
