Burnley goalscorer Loum Tchaouna says he was encouraged to shoot from long range after seeing Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow was not set.
The substitute thundered in a 25-yard effort in the 68th-minute to put his side 2-0 up, ultimately wrapping up the game for the hosts. Darlow, yet to keep a clean sheet this season, was starting his fifth straight Leeds game.
There was “no doubt” the Welshman would start the fixture in the mind of Daniel Farke, with Lucas Perri still not match ready despite returning to team training following his quad setback.
Darlow’s loose pass out of play started Burnley’s attacking phase of play which eventually saw them take the lead on 18 minutes through Lesley Ugochukwu. He could do nothing about Tchaouna’s pile-driver, though the scorer says he noticed a lax in concentration from the goalkeeper.
Describing his goal to BBC Match Of The Day, the Burnley attacker said: “I touched the ball, I turned, I watched the goalkeeper and he was not ready. I saw that I had an angle for the shot so I shot and it was a beautiful goal, so I am happy.”
Many supporters had wanted to see Darlow start the game regardless of Perri’s fitness in light of his performances in the no.1’s absence. Farke hinted last week that Perri could need more time to get up to speed so Darlow could be given the nod against West Ham on Friday night.
This is Darlow’s longest run of Premier League games since playing in eight straight matches with Newcastle United between September and November 2021. He failed to keep a clean sheet in that period too, with Newcastle in a similar table position as Leeds are in now.
