Chelsea in pole position to sign Ligue 1 defender

Chelsea return to Champions League action when they host Dutch side Ajax on Wednesday.

Enzo Maresca’s side have so far won once and lost once in the group phase of the competition, following up a 3-1 defeat against Bayern Munich with a 1-0 victory against Portuguese side Benfica.

The Blues have impressed in the Premier League recently, though, beating Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in their last two outings, and Maresca will expect to see his side get the better of an Ajax side that have lost both of their games in the Champions League so far.

In the meantime, it has emerged that Chelsea are in the running to sign a Ligue 1 defender.

As per CaughtOffside, the West London outfit are monitoring Strasbourg right-back Guela Doue.

The report claims that Chelsea are not the only Premier League side interested the full-back, with Brighton and Hove Albion, Brentford and Aston Villa all also said to be keeping tabs on him.

It is claimed that the Blues had scouts in attendance to watch Doue during Strasbourg’s 3-3 draw against Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on Friday evening.

Doue provided his second assist of the season during that game, helping Liam Rosenior’s side to earn an impressive point.

Despite Chelsea’s interest in the player, Doue is under contract at his current club until 2029 and the report suggests that Strasbourg will therefore demand a fee in excess of £25 million to allow the player to leave next year.

Chelsea are under the same ownership group as Strasbourg – BlueCo – and several players have moved between the two clubs over the past couple of years.

Since joining Strasbourg from fellow French side Rennes last year, the Ivorian has made 39 appearances for his current side across all competitions, scoring twice and providing four assists.
