Doug Martin, the running back who was dubbed the “Muscle Hamster” by his college teammates and played seven seasons in the NFL, has died. He was 36.
Martin’s family confirmed his death Sunday with Tampa Bay Times reporter Rick Stroud.
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family said in the statement. “Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
Martin first earned his nickname when he played at Boise State from 2007 to 2011. He received the moniker because of his strength and ability to be a power back, despite standing only 5 feet 9 inches tall. As a redshirt senior at the school, Martin rushed for 1,299 yards and 16 touchdowns. Those numbers and his physical attributes helped land him a first-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012.
Martin spent his first six seasons in the league with the Buccaneers. During that span, he rushed for 4,633 yards and 30 touchdowns while also catching 130 passes for 1,091 yards and two touchdowns. Martin was named an All-Pro in the 2015 season and was also named to two Pro Bowls.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers said in a statement released Sunday afternoon. “From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.
“He was a fan favorite during his time in Tampa Bay and was honored as one of the top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements,” the team continued. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life.”
After leaving Tampa Bay, Martin signed with the then-Oakland Raiders in 2018, starting nine of 16 games and finishing with 723 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Martin wanted to play another season with the Raiders in 2019, but a shoulder injury landed him on injured reserve.
