An early look at Unai Emery’s injury list ahead of Aston Villa’s meeting with Go Ahead Eagles

Unai Emery’s side edged a 2-1 scoreline over Spurs in the Premier League on Sunday, extending their winning run to five games in all competitions. There is little time to rest, though, as their clash with Go Ahead Eagles is just days away.

Villa will travel to the Netherlands this week to take on the Eredivisie side, who have three points for their first two games of the European campaign. Emery’s side are sitting nicely in fourth, having picked up wins against Bologna and Feyenoord.

The manager saw three players return from injury against Tottenham but three still remain out of action heading into Thursday. We’ve taken a look at Aston Villa’s latest fitness news ahead of this week’s clash with Go Ahead Eagles.

Aston Villa fitness boost as three players return vs Spurs

Jadon Sancho, Emi Buendia and Ollie Watkins all returned to Emery’s match-day squad on Sunday following a positive update from Emery midweek. The manager confirmed the trio had been training normally and were in contention for the weekend, providing no late setbacks presented themselves.

All three were named as substitutes for the trip to London. Watkins and Buendia both came off the bench around the hour mark, and the latter was responsible for the winning goal. Buendia’s strike secured all three points on the road for the Villans, who are now unbeaten in six games in all competitions.

The returning trio will be expected to be in contention for the Go Ahead Eagles clash as well.

Emery is still without three players on his injury list. When Aston Villa make the trip to Deventer later this week, it will be without two names on the squad sheet, while one remains in doubt.

Youri Tielemans: He is not expected to be back until late next month after experiencing a setback with his ongoing calf injury. The midfielder hasn’t played since September and he is set to face another four weeks on the sidelines. A return against Leeds United after the next international break has been suggested for Tielemans. Potential return date: November 23rd (Leeds United)

Andres Garcia: The right-back is yet to make his first appearance of the season and few updates have been provided on the progress of his recovery. Villa News provided insight from Dr Rajpal Brar back in August, who is concerned that the lack of regular updates could indicate Garcia is either suffering from a long-term injury or he is not responding well to the rehab process. Potential return date: Unknown

Tyrone Mings: Emery provided a positive update on Tyrone Mings ahead of the Tottenham clash but stressed his involvement would rely on a late fitness test. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the manager said the defender was ‘getting better’ and he had been training individually in the lead up to the match.

“Tomorrow, we will see how he is. The idea is to train with the team and after that we will decide,” Emery said.

However, Mings wasn’t included in the squad to face Tottenham and remains a doubt ahead of the midweek action in Europe. Potential return date: October 23rd (Go Ahead Eagles)
