Danny Welbeck's Sunderland 'love' message & Nick Woltemade Newcastle row truth

Welbeck, now 34, has always had a soft spot for the Black Cats after a loan spell on Wearside early in his career, and remains a popular figure with Sunderland fans - even more so after his recent strikes against the Magpies.

Welbeck scored the winners in league and FA Cup games at St James' Park last season and helped himself to a double against Eddie Howe's side at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Welbeck blew a kiss towards the Newcastle supporters after his first goal, and said afterwards: “Their fans have a little bit of banter with me during games.

“I’ve got a lot of love for the Stadium of Light and Sunderland as well. They played a massive part in my development as a youngster coming through.”

Welbeck also lifted the lid on his disagreement with Newcastle's Nick Woltemade after his second goal against the Magpies.

Woltemade had levelled for Newcastle, only for Welbeck to strike his second just eight minutes later.

Welbeck said: “He was kind of telling me to hurry up after the second goal, to get back so they can restart.

“It's part of the game but it was nice to get the two goals and, most important, the three points puts us in a nice position going into next week.

“We had a few words but it's football and there’s heated discussions, there's moments on the pitch where things are said.

“But it’s only football. Once the final whistle is blow, it's a bit of sportsmanship and's all it is.”
