TJ Hockenson looked to have scored a touchdown to give the Vikings a chance to get back into the game

Minnesota Vikings tight end TJ Hockenson was left furious with NFL officials after they overturned a touchdown that he believed he scored against the Philadelphia Eagles in the final three minutes.

Former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz had his struggles in the game against a reeling Philadelphia team, as he looked to have found Hockenson in the end zone to give the team a chance. Both the Eagles and Vikings had their opportunities to pull away with a lead, but made a number of mistakes in a close game.

With 2:58 on the clock, Hockenson looked to make a diving catch on a broken play for the Vikings to bring the team within three points of taking a lead over the Eagles while still having all three timeouts to play with.

However, after a review of the catch it was ruled that Hockenson lost position of the ball while he was going out of bounds - leaving the tight end furious.

All scoring plays are reviewed in the NFL, but Hockenson was off the mindset that he had control of the ball throughout the catch and was dumbfounded as to why it had been overturned.

Speaking after the game, Hockenson said: "There was nothing to overturn it. I mean, I was out there. I felt it. Hands under the ball; snag it; and I don’t understand.

"I don’t basically understand the catch rule at this point. I don’t understand how New York can call in and just be like, ‘Yeah, that’s not a catch,’ when there was no evidence that it wasn’t. I mean, I had it. I think it’s ridiculous.”

Hockenson also stated that two members of the officiating crew disagreed with the overturn, believing him to have made the catch.

Speaking on the play afterward, NFL official Mark Butterworth said there was clear and obvious video evidence that the ball hit the ground.

He said: "The ruling on the field was a touchdown. So it’s replay’s jurisdiction to stop the game. We used broadcast-enhanced shots to show that as he was going to the ground - he needs control of the ball throughout the process of the catch.

"He lost control of the ball. The ball hit the ground. Then, he regained control of the ball. So therefore, we overturned it to an incomplete pass.”

The Vikings were not able to find the end zone on the drive and instead had to settle for field goal to make it 28-22 to the Eagles - who were able to run out the clock after a deep ball to AJ Brown on an excellent touch pass from Jalen Hurts sealed the game.
