Commanders Vs. Cowboys (game one) – Studs and Duds

Oct 20, 2025, 1:02 PM UTC

This entire game was ONE BIG DUD…

Washington AGAIN came out unprepared and played sloppy all afternoon. Dan Quinn’s squad was “called” for 11 penalties that resulted in 118 yards. Joe Whitt’s defense allowed a staggering 409 yards (6.6 yards per play). That same unit gave up 152 rushing yards. The secondary allowed Lamb and Pickens to combine for nine receptions, 192 yards and a touchdown. Jayden Daniels was not sharp, and he lost yet another fumble on a play he was injured on. His receivers dropped four passes. The offensive line allowed pressure all afternoon and failed to open up holes for Bill - who averaged just 2.5 yards per carry.

Overall, it was a game to forget - and yet again, it seems that Washington was another team’s “get right” game.

Below are my Studs and Duds of the game, followed by some notes.

* **Daron Payne:** Payne has been a consistent menace through seven games, even if his teammates on that side of the ball have not played well. He finished with a team high THREE passes defended (more than any of our defensive backs) to go along with five total tackles, one for a loss, two pressures, a quarterback hit and a safety.

* **Tress Way:** You know it’s a rough game when your punter ends up as a stud. Way punted five times for an average of 57.2 with a long of 60.

* **THAT’S ALL FOLKS!**

* **Joe Whitt Jr.:** His time here has come. The defense has quit on him. He continues to trot out Bobby Wagner, who can no longer play in today’s NFL as an every-down linebacker, to lead this defense. His schemes are horrible, his personnel choices are embarrassing, and his adjustments are non-existent.

* **Marshon Lattimore:** This was an absolutely HORRIBLE trade by Adam Peters. Now is the time to move on. Trade him, cut him - WHATEVER. He just HAS to go!

* **Bobby Wagner:** Yes, he’s a future Hall of Famer, but he can no longer be an every-down linebacker in this league. He’s a COMPLETE liability in any run outside of the B-gaps, and he can’t cover. It’s sad to see him go out this way - although I blame Whitt and Quinn.

* **Jayden Daniels:** Jayden Daniels did not have a good game, but there is a caveat to that. He had street free agents and practice squad candidates out there running routes and timing was clearly off. His receivers also dropped four passes. Still, like I have said many times in the past - I have to call a spade a spade. Daniels was erratic with his ball placement and also lost ANOTHER fumble on a play where he injured his hamstring. Before he left the game in the third quarter, he was an unimpressive 12/22 for 156 yards and a touchdown with one fumble lost. He did have a one-yard rushing touchdown on a play where it looked like he bobbled the handoff and just took it himself. He was VERY poor throwing against man coverage (3-10 for 39 yards).

* **Marcus Mariota:** Marcus came into the game cold and never heated up. He completed just four of his 10 attempts and had a HORRBLE pick-six. He did have few nice runs, but that was when the game was pretty far out of reach.

* **Preston Smith:** It’s not like he’s seeing a ton of snaps at EDGE, but when he is, he’s NOT doing his job. PERIOD!

* **Josh Conerly Jr.:** After two nice games Conerly slid back into early-season form. He was a walking penalty and gave up a team high six pressures and allowed two sacks.

* **Quan Martin:** It’s unbelievable how a player garnering such preseason hype all fallen so sharply. Is it the scheme? Is it talent? I do not know the answer to these questions, but what I do know is he can’t seem to tackle consistently and can’t seem to cover. That is a recipe for disaster.

* **Dan Quinn:** Yet again, Quinn failed to have his team prepared for a big matchup, and yet again, Washington came out slow to start the game. Yet again his team looked undisciplined on both sides of the ball, and yet again, there were no halftime adjustments made.

* **Officiating:** The officials were incredibly HORRIBLE and I hope the NFL fines them for their actions. The roughing the passer early against Martin was laughable, and the missed pass interference at the goal line against Robbie Chosen was one of the worst missed calls I have seen in some time.

* Frankie Luvu has to play at or near the line of scrimmage as a pass rusher or quarterback spy. He’s not good when asked to play in space. He had six tackles including two for a loss but also missed some tackles and looked lost in coverage.

* Mike Sainristil had an up and down game. He had two nice passes defended, but also allowed some easy receptions, including a touchdown to Ferguson. It was a step in the right direction but he’s still playing a lot worse than in his rookie season.

* Jordan Magee needs more playing time. PERIOD!

* Zach Ertz had three receptions for 37 yards and a touchdown, but he dropped two passes and missed a key block on a two-point conversion.

* In his first game action with Washington, Robbie Chosen did a pretty nice job. He led the team with four receptions and showed good hands and solid routes.

* Percy Butler needs to see more time at safety.

* Jeremy Reaves, for as much as I love him, needs to be a special teams player - not a starter at safety.

* Why won’t Kliff include Ben Sinnott in the passing game?

* For as much as well all feel Adam Peters can do no wrong, is it time to question some of his moves?
