New role for Potter

Graham Potter has returned to full time employment - just 24 days after being sacked by West Ham United.

The 50-year-old has reignited his love affair with Swedish football, where he made his name as manager of Östersunds, to become the national manager following the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was fired in the wake of defeats against Switzerland (0-2) and Kosovo (0-1).

"I am very honoured by this mission, but also extremely inspired," Potter told the Swedish team's website. "Sweden has fantastic players who, every week, shine in the best leagues. My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer."

Kim Källström, Head of Football at SvFF added: "It feels very good that Graham has come in as coach of the men's national team. We are all aware of the situation we are in, and believe that with his leadership qualities he will get the team together in a good way. He is tactically skilled at creating the conditions to win matches and has an ability to identify players' strengths and how they work together in the best way."

And Swedish FA chairman Simon Åström was also delighted to land their key target. "It is still our goal to make it to the World Cup Finals next summer, he said.

"Our hope is to play a playoff in March and all the decisions we have made now have been based on optimizing the conditions to be able to reach our goal. We have worked in a structured and focused way with this process over the past week and with Graham Potter we get a strong and experienced leadership that has been tested at the absolute highest level."

Potter takes over from today, having been placed in temporary charge of the Swedes for the remainder of the World Cup qualification process. That includes fixtures against Switzerland and Slovenia plus November and a potential playoff in March and will be automatically extended to cover the World Cup Finals should Sweden qualify.

The Swedes lost their most recent outing 1-0 at home to Kosovo, a result that leaves them bottom of European qualifying group B with just one point from four games. While they are already unable to catch group leaders Switzerland (currently with 10 points), the hope is that wins in their final two group matches would be sufficient to secure a play-off spot.
