Patrick Mahomes fooled the Raiders with a great trick play

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had an Oscar-worthy performance on a play he ran against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, and it may have been a factor in his team picking up a key first down.

Mahomes and the Chiefs had a 4th-and-1 in their own territory early in the second quarter of their 31-0 Week 7 win over the Raiders at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Andy Reid had his offense line up to go for it, and it looked at first like Mahomes was trying to draw the Raiders offsides with a hard count.

After attempting the hard count a few times, Mahomes stepped back and could be heard saying “this f—ing never f—ing works, man.” The star quarterback was pretending he was frustrated that he was told to try to get the Raiders to commit a penalty.

Mahomes then quickly took the snap and handed off to Kareem Hunt, who ran up the middle for a first down.

For what it’s worth, the Raiders still seemed ready for the snap. We doubt they were fooled by Mahomes’ pre-snap antics, but it was a good idea from the Chiefs. The question is whether they should have waited to attempt it against a tougher opponent, because teams will likely be expecting it now.
