Cardiff star's replacement lined up
Sheffield Wednesday have been given permission to bring in an emergency loan goalkeeper following the suspension of Cardiff City’s Ethan Horvath.
A deal that is currently in the works is that of Joe Lumley from Bristol City, with The Star reporting that the Owls are in talks with the Robins over an emergency seven-day loan. *Sign up to ourCardiff City WhatsApp channel here*.**
Horvath, who joined the Owls on loan from Cardiff in August, was sent off late in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic and will now miss the midweek clash against Middlesbrough.
The US international was signed earlier this season after a long-term injury to young stopper Pierce Charles, with the EFL granting Wednesday special dispensation to complete the deal despite financial restrictions and registration embargoes.
With both Horvath and Charles now unavailable, Henrik Pedersen’s side are without a recognised senior goalkeeper. However, under EFL Regulation 58 – Emergency Goalkeeper Loan, the club have been given the green light to bring in a temporary replacement on a seven-day deal.
The EFL’s current restrictions will not prevent Wednesday from completing a short-term move, with the loan expected to be ratified once a suitable and Lumley the intended target.
Kellyman delighted after 'tough year' at Chelsea
Cardiff City forward Omari Kellyman says he’s “delighted” to get off the mark for his new club after scoring his first goal in the 2-1 win over Reading — and revealed how the strike capped a long road back from injury.
The 19-year-old levelled the game shortly after half-time at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, netting on his first league start for the Bluebirds as Brian Barry-Murphy’s side climbed to the top of the League One table.
Kellyman’s breakthrough moment came after what he described as a “tough season” at Chelsea, where a serious hamstring injury brought his maiden campaign to an abrupt end and required surgery.
“I’m delighted,” said Kellyman. “I’ve been working hard since coming to the club. I had a tough season last year, so I’ve been trying to find my feet again. Coming here has been a step in the right direction.
“I’m feeling good. Every game I’m getting more confident in my body that I can push on and keep building. Today is the longest I’ve played in a game in a long time, so to be back playing week in, week out is great — and the confidence will come with that.”
The £19million former Aston Villa prospect joined Chelsea in 2024 but saw his progress halted by the long-term hamstring problem. Now, under Barry-Murphy, he’s eager to rebuild his rhythm and fitness in south Wales.
“I’ve got a good relationship with Brian,” he added. “I can say to him if I’m not feeling 100% because of my injury, and he’s very understanding of my situation and how I need to build back strength.
“I’ve really enjoyed it here so far and I hope scoring today is just the start.
“We’re a team who like to dominate and have a lot of possession because of the manager’s style of play. I’m an attacking player who likes to have the ball at my feet and showcase what I can do — I’ve definitely benefited from that.”
Colwill named Carabao Cup player of the round
Cardiff City starlet Joel Colwill has been named Carabao Cup Player of the Round for his outstanding display in the Bluebirds’ memorable 2-1 win over Premier League side Burnley.
The academy graduate was instrumental in the third-round victory at Turf Moor, opening the scoring on the half-hour mark to set Brian Barry-Murphy’s side on their way to a famous result.
Colwill pounced after Burnley failed to clear a corner, with Calum Chambers keeping the attack alive and squaring the ball for the 19-year-old to tap home from close range. Moments later, Callum Robinson added a second for Cardiff, and despite a second-half reply from Zian Flemming, the Championship outfit held firm to book their place in round four.
The goal was Colwill’s second of the competition, having also scored in the Bluebirds’ 3-1 win over Cheltenham Town in the previous round. Sign up to our daily Bluebirds newsletter here.
Speaking after being named Player of the Round, Colwill said he was thrilled to receive the honour and praised his teammates for a complete team performance.
“I’m really happy to win it,” he said. “I think we’ve played really well in the rounds we’ve played in so far, and I’m just grateful to win.
“At Burnley, we were so intense in the way we pressed without the ball, and we played some good stuff with it, so it was a really good team performance.
“The support has been really good from the fans, in my opinion. To go all the way up to Burnley on a Tuesday night is a credit to them. It’s going to be a really exciting game at Wrexham. It’s a Welsh clash, isn’t it, so it should be good.”
Cardiff will now travel to Wrexham for a highly-anticipated all-Welsh tie in the fourth round later this month.
Ex-fan favourite set for Premier League switch
Former Cardiff City winger Chris Burke is set to make a move into Premier League football — this time in the dugout rather than on the pitch.
According to the Killie Chronicle, Burke is leaving his role as Kilmarnock’s Under-19s coach to take up a similar position with Brentford, where he will work within the Bees’ youth development system.
The 41-year-old, who also serves as assistant manager with Scotland’s Under-19s, will join the west London club as part of their continued investment in youth coaching and player progression.
Burke enjoyed a memorable playing career that included spells with Rangers, Cardiff City, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and Ross County before hanging up his boots at Kilmarnock, where he also began his coaching journey.
After coming through the ranks at Ibrox, Burke won a league title and League Cup with Rangers before moving south to join Cardiff in 2009. He quickly became a fan favourite in the Welsh capital, making over 100 appearances across three seasons and playing a key role in the Bluebirds’ push for Premier League promotion under Dave Jones and Malky Mackay.
He later joined Birmingham City, where he enjoyed arguably the most productive spell of his career, winning multiple Player of the Year awards and scoring 25 goals in 155 games.
Burke spent five years as a player at Kilmarnock, turning out more than 180 times before moving into coaching. Reflecting on his departure, he paid tribute to the Ayrshire club in an emotional farewell.
“Kilmarnock has been such a special part of my life since the day I arrived in 2017,” Burke said.
“I’ve had some incredible memories here, from moments on the pitch to working with the next generation of players.
"It’s been a privilege to represent the club and to coach within an environment that means so much to me. I want to thank the fans, staff, players and everyone connected to Killie for their support over the years.”
Kilmarnock added in a statement: “Everyone at the club would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Chris for his outstanding service, dedication and professionalism both on and off the pitch.
"From scoring memorable late goals and sensational free-kicks to leading our youth side to Scottish Youth Cup success last season, Chris has embodied the standards we strive for every day.”
