Man City sweating on Rodri fitness ahead of Swans tie

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admits he's resigned to being without Rodri for at least another week, with the star midfielder now racing to be fit for the upcoming Carabao Cup trip to Swansea City.

Rodri had hoped to be back to full fitness for the Premier League win over Everton on Saturday, having pulled out of the recent international break with a hamstring injury suffered against Brentford earlier this month. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here.

The Man City boss has now confirmed Rodri will miss the upcoming games with Villarreal and Aston Villa, meaning the trip to the Swansea.com Stadium is a potential return date.

"It's not long, but it's muscular and you have to be careful," Guardiola said. "We've tried so many times, we've tried to not take a risk, but we have not been able to do that. So we will see."

Guardiola is also sweating on the fitness of Nico O'Reilly, who was withdrawn in the final few minutes of the win over the Toffees, although that problem isn't believed to be as serious.

"I think it was a knock. We'll see. Hopefully it will not be dangerous," said Guardiola.

Potter handed Sweden job

Former Swansea City boss Graham Potter has been confirmed as the new head coach of the Swedish national team.

Potter has signed a short-term deal with Sweden in a bid to get their faltering World Cup qualification bid back on track, having left West Ham United earlier in the season.

He succeeds John Dahl Tomasson, who was sacked following the 1-0 defeat to Kosovo last week, a result that has now taken automatic qualification out of reach.

The Nations League means there is still a route to the play-offs even if Sweden fail to secure a place in the top two, and Potter says he's looking forward to the challenge.

"I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired," Potter said. "Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world's best leagues during the weeks.

"My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer."

Vigouroux hails 'encouraging' point

Lawrence Vigouroux says their battling stalemate with Southampton at St Mary’s offered plenty of reason for encouragement for Swansea.

The Chile international helped secure a third clean sheet of the season, despite a dominant Saints performance, as the Swans shared the spoils with their hosts on the English south coast. Sign up to the Swansea City WhatsApp service to get breaking news and top stories sent to your phone.

“I think that was a point we can be happy with,” Vigouroux said.

“We’ve come away from home against a team who were in the Premier League last season, and who have a lot of quality.

“So to keep a clean sheet and put a point on the board is a positive and something we should be encouraged by.

“Every game and every challenge in the Championship is different and you have to be able to deal with that and find ways to put points on the board and get results.

“It was a very tough game but we have come away with a deserved point.”
