Newcastle midfielder a doubt for Benfica game

**Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is a doubt for the Champions League clash with Benfica because of illness.**

The Italy international did not train ahead of the game at St James’ Park on Tuesday and boss Eddie Howe says he is unsure whether he will be able to feature.

“A bit of illness for Sandro so he will be touch and go for the game,” Howe said.

“We’ll give him every opportunity. He wasn’t there for training today. He’s such an important player so we’ll use all the hours we have.”

Newcastle return to Champions League action against Jose Mourinho’s Benfica having thrashed Union Saint Gilloise 4-0 in their last league stage outing.

But they were beaten at Brighton on Saturday and Howe says his side’s upcoming clash is a perfect chances to bounce back.

“We feel like we need another game,” he said.

“We’re delighted to play again quickly and try to build some momentum back in our performances. Reflecting on the Brighton game was mixed.

“There was a lot of good in the game but ultimately it doesn’t matter, we lost the game and we know we need to improve.”
