The Shotgun/Throwdown (10/20/25): No. 24 WVU women extend unbeaten run, No. 3 men fall in first …

Welcome to The Shotgun/Throwdown, your daily West Virginia sports roundup (that we didn’t already talk about in another article) with some sophomoric humor and daily distractions thrown in for good measure. And if there’s something we missed, be sure to talk about it in the comments.

The weekend brought mixed results for West Virginia soccer. The women’s team pushed its unbeaten streak to 12 matches, while the men’s side saw its first conference loss in nearly two years.

The No. 24 WVU women’s soccer team (10–2–3, 5–0–3 Big 12) rallied for a 3–2 win at Kansas State behind another late brace from senior Taylor White, who scored in the 82nd and 84th minutes to seal the comeback. White became the first Mountaineer to hit double-digit goals in a season since Michaela Abam in 2017, and her fourth game-winner of the year kept WVU unbeaten in Big 12 play and all-time against the Wildcats (8–0–1). Freshman Kailyn Effah added the first-half equalizer, and WVU hit the 10-win mark for the 28th time in program history.

The No. 3 WVU men (9–2–2, 4–1–0 Sun Belt) dropped a 2–1 decision at Georgia State — their first league loss since falling at Kentucky on Oct. 27, 2023. Sophomore Braedon Smith scored just before halftime, but the Panthers capitalized on a late chance to snap West Virginia’s 16-match conference unbeaten streak.

Both programs return home this week. The men face Old Dominion on Wednesday at 7:00PM on ESPN+, while the women host Iowa State on Thursday for Soctoberfest — a True Blue match featuring Oktoberfest-themed concessions and free stein cups for the first 500 fans. That match also kicks off at 7:00PM on ESPN+.
