Nick Pope lifts the lid on 'regular' phone calls with Thomas Tuchel's England coach

Six clean sheets in 10 games, Pope looks to have put the frustrations of two injury-disrupted seasons behind him and has starred for the Magpies in the early stages of the season.

He'll be looking to keep out Benfica in the Champions League and notch clean sheet number seven of the campaign on Tuesday night.

And his fine form has caught the eye of Thomas Tuchel, even if it hasn't yet led to an England call-up under the German.

Pope was selected by interim boss Lee Carsley after Gareth Southgate's exit but hasn't featured since. He might not have had a call-up from Tuchel, but he has had a phone call.

"I spoke to him when he took over, or soon after he took the the job and I've been in regular contact with Hilario \[England's goalkeeper coach\]," revealed the goalkeeper.

"I feel like the communication's been really good. I've really enjoyed kind of having the opportunity to speak to him and to Hilario on a pretty regular basis. So I do feel like I'm in the frame if you like, and it's something that's not dead. That's always nice to have in the back of your mind."

Pope added: "I think it's always best to let your football do the talking and try and keep the ball out on the net. That will always stand you in good stead. Hopefully Dan Burn's putting a good word in as well!"

With that in mind, then, next summer's World Cup is very much in Pope's thinking.

"I've been to two already, so a third in America would be pretty special," said the 33-year-old.

"At my age there's not many opportunities to come. So, yeah, if I get to the World Cup, that would be something that would be a good achievement for myself."

But the priority for Pope is club rather than country and the goalkeeper has extended his stay at the club until the summer of 2027.

He said: "It feels ever-evolving here, every transfer window, every few months, whether that's players, new bits around the training ground, just ourselves as a team.

"I think we've evolved over that time and it's been great to be a part of it and you want to be a part of moving forward.

"We've got that first trophy under our belt now and we've qualified for the Champions League twice, and you're looking to kind of do that back-to-back, then it's can you achieve more and get into knockout games and win knockout games.

"We've had some big moments in the last three years and you strive for more.

"We've got a top team, top manager and top teams get to the later stages of the Champions League. Everyone wants to be a part of that.

"Although we've qualified for the Champions League and when we stood on the pitch last day against Everton and we'd been beat, we'd have snapped your hand off for that, believe you me. But now we're in it, we have a a top squad, are more experienced than we were first time around. We're looking to take it to the next level."
