Wayne Rooney has confessed that Manchester United summer acquisition Bryan Mbeumo has 'proved him wrong' following his £71million transfer from Brentford. Mbeumo was amongst United's most significant captures ahead of the 2025/2026 campaign.
Having netted 20 Premier League goals last season, the 26-year-old joined Ruben Amorim's squad following extensive negotiations. Thus far, Mbeumo has found the net twice in the Premier League for United and was amongst their goal-scorers in Sunday's 2-1 triumph over Liverpool.
The striker capitalised on Amad's pass - within the opening two minutes - before defeating Giorgi Mamardashvili. Cody Gakpo levelled matters for the Premier League champions in the 78th minute before Harry Maguire struck a decisive blow to secure United's first Anfield success in almost a decade.

Previously, Rooney confessed that he had harboured doubts around Mbeumo's capacity to flourish at Old Trafford. However, after emerging as one of Amorim's most threatening assets, the ex-United forward has acknowledged his initial assessment was mistaken.
"For me he [Mbuemo] has been Manchester United's stand-out players this season and he hasn't got his rewards for his hard work and the sacrifices he's made for the team," he said on his BBC Podcast. "It was a great goal.
"I'll be honest I was a bit sceptical when United signed him, I don't know if he had the ability to come and play for Manchester United, but he's proved me wrong. I think he's been a great addition to the team and is by far United's best player of the season."

Rooney also showered praise on United head coach Amorim following his successive Premier League triumphs since taking over from Erik ten Hag last November. "It's such a huge win for the manager," he continued.
"I've questioned decisions, I've questioned tactics, I've questioned players' desire over this season and last season. That win is massive. To win at Anfield is not easy to do.
"The confidence that gives the players and the managers, I'll be the first to say he got it absolutely spot on. I hope we see more of it. Two points off Liverpool now... I really liked the performance and we know the players can do it, but we have to see this on a consistent level."
