The Pittsburgh Steelers’ loss to the Cincinati Bengals in Week 7 was full of disappointment. After jumping out to an early lead, the Steelers quickly fell behind the Bengals. However, for a brief moment, it looked like the Steelers were going to win the game. Aaron Rodgers thew a 68-yard touchdown to Pat Freiermuth with around two minutes left to give the Steelers the lead in the fourth quarter. Broderick Jones got a little too excited after that play, tackling Rodgers to ground. While the quarterback was frustrated, that moment hasn’t damaged their relationship.
“We’re still joking about it,” Jones said Monday via 93.7 The Fan on Twitter. “He was a little mad, but it’s football. It gets intense. But it’s still no love lost. It’s just the energy that he brings and that I bring. He told me, ‘Don’t lose the fire,’ and I told him the same. We shall see on Sunday, after he throws another touchdown, I might tackle him again.”
That was an odd moment after the Steelers had just taken the lead with the game almost over, scoring on a great play. It’s easy to see why Jones was excited, but he’s got to be more aware of what he’s doing. Rodgers is no spring chicken. He’s 41 years old and tackling him like that isn’t safe.
Thankfully, despite Rodgers being upset in the moment, he and Jones aren’t on bad terms. Considering Jones is Rodgers’ blindside protector, that’s important. Left tackle is one of the most valuable spots along the offensive line. It’s important that the player at that position has a good relationship with the quarterback.
It was a bonehead move, but it’s good to hear that Jones recognized his mistake. Emotions can be tough to control on the football field. However, protecting the quarterback should be near the top of everyone’s priority list, especially the offensive linemen.
Hopefully, Jones and Rodgers are on the same page on their celebrations for the rest of the year. Maybe Jones can take a swing at tackling Rodgers again if the Steelers manage to win a championship this year. Otherwise, a high-five or a hug are better options. It wouldn’t serve the Steelers well if their left tackle injured their quarterback during a celebration.
