The Miami Dolphins have been a complete mess in 2025. After another poor showing on Sunday in Week 7 — a 31-6 loss at the hands of the Cleveland Browns — the Dolphins are now 1-6 on the season, and everyone is wondering how much longer Mike McDaniel will remain the team’s head coach. On Monday, NFL Network’s insider Ian Rapoport provided an update on the ongoing situation in Miami, particularly as it concerns McDaniel. “McDaniel said they really need to figure out who they are and really find out what they are made of,” Rapoport reported. “The problem is, the record’s rough, and the spotlight is very firmly on the Miami Dolphins right now, and there’s been several reasons why. “First of all … high-profile losses can put a coach … in the crosshairs. Plus, last week, we had the controversy with starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa calling out some of his teammates … and then walking back his comments.” Story continues below advertisement “And then they come out and have one of the worst loss of the season to one of the NFL’s worst teams,” Rapoport continued. “My understanding (is that Dolphins owner) Stephen Ross likes (McDaniel) and believes in him, has extended him in the past, and wants to go forward with Mike McDaniel.” Story continues below advertisement “The only thing that would change (that) is if fans suddenly stop showing up to the stadium … or if the players stop playing for him.” McDaniel, 42, has a 29-29 record in the regular season at the helm of the Dolphins. He’s 0-2 in the playoffs with Miami. McDaniel has been working in the NFL as a coach since 2006, when at 23 years old he served as an offensive assistant for the Houston Texans. After further stints with Washington, Cleveland, and Atlanta, McDaniel became the run game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, a role he served for four seasons before being upgraded to San Fran’s offensive coordinator for the 2021 season. Story continues below advertisement McDaniel was hired as the Dolphins’ head coach the following season.
