The former Newcastle and Manchester City stopper was impressed by a well-worked Villa move.
As Aston Villa continue their winning run, Shay Given was left speechless after one of their goals against Spurs.
In a match that was evenly poised, often it can be a moment of genius or a big mistake that decides such bouts. In this case, it was the former as Emiliano Buendia rounded off a well-worked Villans move to secure the three points. As Villa now jump to 11th in the table, BBC pundit, Shay Given was blown away by the goal.
‘A PlayStation goal’ - Shay Given lauds Villa winner
Matty Cash hit a superb half volley pass to Lucas Digne, who found himself in uncharted territory on the right hand side. The Frenchman then brought the ball down beautifully and found Buendia with the pass, who struck the ball past Vicario into the far-left corner to cap off the move.
Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Given was impressed by the football of his former side: “This is the best goal I think I’ve seen all season. The pass from Cash is unbelievable, the technique to get it out to Digne, and his two touches are incredible. After that, Buendia produces a bit of magic himself on his left foot. It’s just an unbelievable goal. It’s like a PlayStation goal, it is just world-class from Aston Villa.”
The former Ireland International was impressed not just by the goal, but also by the performance of the Argentine, who not for the first time this season, scored after coming off the bench. After his Bayer Leverkusen loan spell, Buendia has looked like a different player at Villa Park.
Emi Buendia back to his best in claret and blue
The midfielder had been linked with a move to rivals, Birmingham City, as well as Leeds United in the summer transfer window, but ended up staying at Villa Park to fight for his place in the team. Despite looking as if he may have been out of favour with Emery, he has seamlessly made his way back into the squad.
Villa signed Buendia from Norwich City in 2021 after he was crowned the EFL Championship Player of the Season. Since then, he’s registered 92 appearances for Aston Villa, scoring 11 goals, however, he has never really been able to establish himself in Emery’s starting XI.
He has mostly been deployed from the bench so far this season, but with three goals in his last four appearances, he may now be pushing for a starting place for the upcoming Europa League match against Go Ahead Eagles away.
