Karl-Anthony Towns Gives Cryptic Take on Knicks Role Before Opening Night

A cryptic answer from New York Knicks All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns on Monday is going to make fans wonder if there is trouble ahead.

On Wednesday night, the Knicks will kick off their 2025-26 campaign, and it is one full of hope and big expectations. After reaching the Eastern Conference Finals last year, they want to take another step forward this season. And the opportunity is there for the taking, with the rivals, the Celtics and Pacers, expected to take big steps back this year.

Furthermore, the same team as last season returns, along with a couple of key bench additions. However, there is one major change. Mike Brown has replaced Tom Thibodeau as head coach. The buzz from training camp has been positive, but an odd comment from Karl-Anthony Towns this week is sure to cause concerns.

Karl-Anthony Towns is asked about his potential in the Knicks' new offense under Mike Brown:

“Honestly, I don’t know,” Towns said on Monday when asked how he sees his fit in Mike Brown’s new offensive system. “We’re figuring it out, but honestly, I just don’t know. It’s just different. We’re still figuring it out.”

With Brown leading the way, the goal is for the offense to be faster, with more ball movement and less reliance on isolation. Obviously, that goes a bit away from the style of play that KAT has succeeded in for much of his career. Yet, it is still a bit surprising that after a month of practices, the five-time All-Star is still unsure of his fit in the offense.

Towns had a big debut season for the Knicks in 2024-25. Posting 24.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, a steal, and shooting 42% from three per game last season. They will need that same sort of production if the Knicks are going to win a championship this season.

It will be interesting to see if there are offensive struggles for the team over the first few months as they look to “figure it out” on that side of the ball.
