Mike Vrabel Reveals Reason for Lack of Playing Time for Rookie Running Back

New England Patriots fans had high for rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson this season.

Henderson shined in preseason games and was expected to make a big impact for a playoff hopeful team. Sunday, though, was a low point for Henderson as he played just nine snaps.

A day after the game, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel revealed his reasoning for the lack of touches for Henderson in Sunday’s win.

“It’s just kind of how it played out,” Vrabel told reporters, via a post on X from Patriots writer Mike Kadlick. “Thought Rhamondre was running well. Had some good protections. TreVeyon’s gonna be a large part of what we do. … That’s just kind of where it was this week.”

Henderson totaled just two carries during his limited playing time, his fewest of the season. He also went without a reception for the first time this season. Overall, it was a disappointing day for the rookie running back that was expected to provide major contributions this season.

It is important to note that Vrabel stated that Henderson would be a large part of the team’s success this season, but it’s unclear when that will be. After a matchup with the Cleveland Browns in Week 8, New England will match up with the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It may not be until Week 10 against the New York Jets that Henderson gets consistent snaps and carries. It’ll be a major point of emphasis to keep Henderson engaged in the gameplan and the team instead of being a frustrated rookie for the remainder of the season.
