The dust has settled from the Denver Broncos' furious comeback win over the New York Giants on Sunday, a win that marked the fourth in a row for a surging Denver team that has catapulted to the top of the AFC West standings.
But one incredibly bad penalty nearly prevented that from happening. When I say incredibly bad, I don't mean in the sense that it was a poor play by the Broncos but rather, the fact that it was even called.
With the Giants trying to rally for a late score, Jaxson Dart launched a pass from about the Broncos' 40-yard line. This play against Riley Moss was called defensive pass interference.
Still pissed about this bogus DPI on Riley Moss yesterday. Refs tried their hardest to change the outcome of that game.pic.twitter.com/xfsYEgx1uX

Not only was this just an incorrect call, it nearly cost the Broncos the game. Head coach Sean Payton ran on the field in sheer frustration over the flag being thrown and drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty himself, though it's unlikely that anyone could really blame him.

that is a horrific DPI call on Riley Moss
he turned his head. underthrown. tried playing the ball.

That DPI on Riley Moss is one of the worst calls I have seen! The under thrown ball and Moss turns around and plays the ball. You cannot call that in that situation!

It turns out that several people disagreed with that being a penalty, which should help lead to the competition committee discussing a proposal to the defensive pass interference rule this offseason. There are plenty of changes that could be considered.
In college, it's a straight 15-yard penalty. No matter how blatant or egregious, it's 15 yards. Many fans like that rule, but there is the argument that professional players will blatantly interfere on a play, gladly willing to take a 15-yard penalty rather than give up a huge play.
However, there has to be something the league can do about an offense that is just going to chuck it up into the end zone, particularly in a late-game situation like this one was, hoping to get a flag that puts the ball on the 1-yard line.
That is where the competition committee could consider making it an automatically renewable play or give coaches the ability to challenge it. In situations where there are two minutes left in the half or the game, these calls would be automatically reviewed. Anything other than the current rule, which is a spot foul, would be good as too many games are decided by these kinds of calls.
