Former All-Pro wide receiver has demanded his release

A former 1,000-yard wide receiver has asked for and received his release after his team’s brutal start to the season.

The Tennessee Titans have released Tyler Lockett at his request, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The move comes one day after the Titans were blown out 31-13 by the New England Patriots.

Lockett had spent his entire NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks until he joined the Titans this offseason. He has not had a significant role in the team’s offense, catching just 10 passes for 70 yards with no touchdowns. Four of those catches came in the team’s Week 3 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Despite the lack of production, he did have a significant role in one of the wilder plays of the season in the Titans’ only win.

Lockett, 33, is used to playing for a relatively consistent winner in Seattle. He posted four straight 1,000-yard seasons from 2019 to 2022, and became a key part of the Seahawks’ offense during that period. Those kinds of numbers are likely behind him, but it is not out of the realm of possibility that he could contribute to a contender.

The Titans are 1-6 and just fired their head coach. It makes sense that an experienced veteran like Lockett would want to be out of that situation.
