Carolina Panthers coach provides update on Bryce Young’s injury

Carolina Panthers coach Dave Canales did not rule out Bryce Young from the NFL team’s next game after the quarterback left Sunday’s 13-6 victory over the New York Jets with an ankle injury.

“If we can have Bryce out there on Sunday,” Canales said on Monday afternoon, “I would love for that to be the case.”

The former Alabama All-American got sacked with 3:56 left in the third quarter. Andy Dalton took over at quarterback for the Panthers, and Young did not return to the field.

“We’re going to go day-to-day,” Canales said. “We’re going to go day-to-day on that right now and just really look at him each day. Just test the ankle in different ways to see if we can’t get him back out there on Wednesday (for practice) in some way, shape or form. So we’re going to just take it that way.

“And I saw him this morning, talked to him and he’s like, ‘Let’s push this thing. Let’s see what we got.’ And so we’re going to try to take that approach with it and just go from there.”

Canales would not elaborate on Young’s injury past the ankle designation.

“I don’t want to get too specific in all the diagnosis of it,” Canales said. “It’s an ankle injury, and it’s something that we feel confident we can go day-to-day with. But, again, he’s going to have to prove and go through some milestones with our return-to-play with our training staff.”

The Panthers play the Buffalo Bills at noon CDT Sunday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, riding a three-game winning streak. Carolina hasn’t had a four-game winning streak since the third through sixth weeks of the 2020 season.

“We have to evaluate how much can Bryce do,” Canales said. “Can he get out there and function in practice? And Andy’s ready to go. He’ll be ready to take on the game plan and to make sure that the whole process, the whole offense, all those things are moving forward as we have to make a decision.”

On Sunday, Young completed 15-of-25 passes for 138 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran for 10 yards on two carries.

In his third season since joining the Panthers as the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Young has completed 138-of-224 passes for 1,288 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions and run for 69 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries.
