Oakland police confirmed that an investigation into the passing of Doug Martin has been launched after the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back and seven-year NFL veteran died in police custody over the weekend.

On Saturday, officers arrived at a residence in Oakland, California upon receiving a call about a break-in at around 4:15 a.m., per the Oakland Police Department (OPD).

According to an official statement from the OPD, a “brief struggle” ensued between Martin and officers on the scene. "Prior to his death, Martin was involved in a break-in at a residence in Oakland," the message read.

"While responding officers were attempting to detain him, a brief struggle occurred. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive.”

"Paramedics responded to the scene, provided medical aid, and transported Martin to a local hospital, where he later died."

In line with OPD department policy, Martin’s passing is being investigated by the Homicide Section, OPD Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

A cause of death for the 36-year-old has not been disclosed as of writing.

A statement from his agency read: "Athletes First and CEO Brian Murphy had the privilege of representing Doug Martin when he was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, following a stellar career at Boise State University.

"Doug Martin's distinguished NFL career—including two Pro Bowl appearances and a 2015 All-Pro honor—was celebrated by countless fans. Off the field, Doug was deeply committed to serving the communities of Boise, Idaho, Stockton, and Oakland California, where his generosity and spirit were well known.

"Privately, Doug battled mental health challenges that profoundly impacted his personal and professional I ife. Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run.

"Following recent media reports about Doug's untimely passing, the family wishes to clarify the circumstances. Doug's parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support.

"Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor's residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police. An investigation into what transpired as he was detained is underway. "The family requests privacy as they navigate this heartbreaking loss."

Addressing Martin’s untimely death, his family wrote in a statement released Sunday: "It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time."

News of Martin’s passing was swiftly met with an outpouring of support and tributes.

The Buccaneers — who named Martin one of the top 50 players in franchise history during Tampa Bay’s 50th year in the NFL — fondly described him as a “fan favorite.”

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers wrote on social media.

“From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.

“He was a fan favorite during his time in Tampa Bay and was honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life.”

Oakland mayor Barbara Lee expressed a similar sentiment, stating: "We mourn the loss of Doug Martin, an Oaklander who had a distinguished NFL career and tragically passed away Saturday morning. Our condolences are with his family and loved ones.”

After being selected by the Buccaneers with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Martin swiftly made his presence felt as a rookie by amassing 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground en route to making the Pro Bowl.

The Boise State product was named a Pro Bowler for the second time in 2015, during which he rushed 288 times for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns over 16 games.
