Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has told Ruben Amorim that he should be mindful of his man-management of Benjamin Sesko after he was dropped for the 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.
After scoring two goals in as many matches prior to the international break, Sesko may have expected to be given a start at Anfield. Instead, Amorim named him among the substitutes, as Matheus Cunha came in.
Cunha took his opportunity with both hands and has left the United boss with a major selection headache heading into the next match at home to Brighton. Speaking exclusively to MEN Sport as an ambassador for Escapist Magazine, Yorke insisted that the United coaching team need to be careful to avoid denting Sesko's confidence.
"One of the narratives for any coach is that you want to create a team that is competitive on all fronts," the current Trinidad and Tobago head coach explained. "From front to back you want two players in every position competing so that way you keep the level high.
"Sesko for me is as good as a striker they have had for a number of years and I feel like you have to trust him and have to believe in him to get the best out of him. With any good player, you want a reaction from him when they have been... 'resting' is the word they tend to use now, not dropped, but you need a reaction from that.
"Ultimately it is all about the team and winning but you want a player of that calibre and that kind of fee, to be playing 90 per cent of the games. That is the only way that he is going to get better, get the pace of the Premier League.
"He works extremely hard, you can see that, but when you play in a team that is struggling, it doesn't matter how good you are, you tend to struggle as well. The system with him will let us see the best of him, it is now how you man-manage these players that will be very important.
"On this occasion it has worked, the manager will get the plaudits from that, but ultimately you have got to make sure that you manage those players equally so you don't end up losing a player that was meant to be your No.1 striker. Your No.1 striker wants to play in these massively important games and can understand when he has been left out, but not in a massively important game.
"You have to have a mindset to make sure that you manage those players so that you aren't losing the faith of Sesko and you are onto something really good."
