Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher issued a message of support to West Ham supporters after a protest against Brentford.
The Hammers now sit 19th in the top flight after eight games with just one win on the board. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are already three points adrift of safety after a worrying start to the campaign.
West Ham fans have grown frustrated by the club’s recruitment and lack of identity in recent years with supporters group Hammers United launching a ‘No More BS’ campaign calling for the resignations of Karren Brady and David Sullivan.
Jamie Carragher slams West Ham ownership
That protest took the form of a boycott against Brentford with large parts of the London Stadium empty as a poor West Ham performance was punished by a 2-0 Brentford win. Speaking after the match, Nuno stood with Hammers supporters.
He said: “Shocking, and been shocking for a while. A long time. It feels an awful long time since they won that European trophy under David Moyes.
“Sometimes when you’re not associated to the club and you stand outside looking in, you question supporters. When supporters go against ownership, a lot of the time it’s a last resort. Very rarely do supporters of their own football club get it wrong. They know exactly what’s going on at this football club, and it’s not down to managers more often than not.
“The ownership at West Ham now is completely different to what we are seeing to, the club that have just battered them on their own patch. It doesn’t feel a modern way of doing things and that’s where I feel the frustration comes from. They look at other clubs, who are not a patch on West Ham - and that’s not being disrespectful to Brentford and maybe a Brighton, we look at those two as forward thinking football clubs - West Ham are a far bigger club but where they are right now means they can’t compete with them on the pitch.”
Gary O’Neil issued Hammers warning ahead of Leeds United
Former West Ham player and ex Wolves manager Gary O’Neil was also in the Sky Sports studio and gave his view on the team’s current form. Nuno takes the Hammers to Elland Road to take on Leeds United on Friday evening.
O’Neil said: “I have real concerns about them. They look lost, from a tactical perspective. Nuno has only been there five minutes and needs time but they look lost, shot of confidence and not together.
“That performance is going to need a seismic shift. Nuno has got a hell of a job on here to get this team to be competitive. They go to Elland Road in four days, which is unforgiving, and they’ll need a big improvement on that to stand a chance.”
