NFL Monday night: Lions, Seahawks post victories

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs piled up 218 yards from scrimmage to pace the Detroit Lions to a 24-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the opening game of the NFL’s Monday night doubleheader.

The former Alabama ball-carrier ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries and caught three passes for 82 yards.

Gibbs scored on a 78-yard run with 5:51 left in the first half and a 5-yard run with 4:39 left in the third quarter.

Gibbs’ 218 yards from scrimmage on Monday night are the 17th-most for an Alabama alumnus in an NFL game. The school record is 303 yards by Josh Jacobs – 229 rushing and 74 receiving – in the Las Vegas Raiders’ 40-34 overtime victory against the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 27, 2022.

In the nightcap on Monday, the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Houston Texans 27-19.

Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had eight receptions for 123 yards and one touchdown. His 11-yard reception from quarterback Sam Darnold on the final play of the first quarter gave Seattle a 14-0 lead.

Houston got stopped on downs three times in the second half, including after reaching the Seattle 1-yard line. The Seahawks turned their stop at the Texans 41 into a touchdown.

Five players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Tampa Bay-Detroit game:

Detroit Lions 24, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9

Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive. A shoulder injury kept Arnold out of the lineup for the second game in a row.

Lions safety Brian Branch (Alabama) missed the game while serving a one-game suspension imposed by the league for unsportsmanlike conduct after Detroit’s previous game.

Buccaneers outside linebacker Chris Braswell (Alabama) made three tackles.

Lions wide receiver Malik Cunningham (Park Crossing) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Lions linebacker Zach Cunningham (Pinson Valley) made one tackle in his return from a three-game injury absence.

Jamel Dean (Auburn) started at cornerback for the Buccaneers. Dean made two tackles and intercepted one pass. Dean has intercepted passes in Tampa Bay’s past two games and three of the past four. He has 11 interceptions in his career. On Monday night, Dean intercepted Detroit quarterback Jared Goff and returned it 13 yards to the Tampa Bay 43-yard line with 21 seconds left in the first half. The Buccaneers were able to turn the takeaway into a field goal on the last snap of the period for their first points.

Buccaneers wide receiver Tez Johnson (Pinson Valley, Troy) had four receptions for 58 yards and one touchdown. A week after scoring the first touchdown of his NFL career, Johnson scored Tampa Bay’s only touchdown on Monday night when he turned a short pass into a 22-yard score that trimmed the Bucs’ deficit to 14-9 with 8:49 left in the third quarter.

Buccaneers defensive tackle Jayson Jones (Calera, Auburn) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Lions safety Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery, Auburn) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Jameson Williams (Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Lions. Williams was targeted twice but did not have a reception.

Detroit (5-2) is off during Week 8 of the NFL season. The Lions return to the field against the Minnesota Vikings at noon CST Nov. 2 at Ford Field in Detroit.

Tampa Bay (5-2) plays the New Orleans Sains at 3:05 p.m. CDT Sunday at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Seattle Seahawks 27, Houston Texans 19

Will Anderson Jr. (Alabama) started at defensive end for the Texans. Anderson made five tackles and recorded one sack. On his fourth sack of the 2025 season, Anderson had a strip-sack of Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold and recovered the loose football for the first touchdown of his NFL career. Anderson’s TD cut Houston’s deficit to 17-12 with 7:24 left in the third quarter.

Jake Andrews (Stanhope Elmore, Troy) started at center for the Texans.

Nico Collins (Clay-Chalkville) started at wide receiver for the Texans. Collins had four receptions for 27 yards.

Texans defensive tackle Marlon Davidson (Greenville, Auburn) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Texans wide receiver Tank Dell (Alabama A&M) is on the physically-unable-to-perform list and not eligible to play.

Texans linebacker Christian Harris (Alabama) did not record any statistics.

Tytus Howard (Monroe County, Alabama State) started at right offensive tackle for the Texans.

Seahawks safety A.J. Finley (St. Paul’s Episcopal) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Seahawks outside linebacker Derick Hall (Auburn) was designated as a game-day inactive. An oblique injury kept Hall off the field.

Josh Jobe (Alabama) started at cornerback for the Seahawks. Jobe made five tackles, registered one quarterback hit and broke up two passes.

Seahawks offensive tackle Amari Kight (Thompson, Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Kamari Lassiter (American Christian) started at cornerback for the Texans. Lassiter led Houston with 10 tackles, recorded three tackles for loss and broke up one pass. Lassiter set a career single-game high for tackles, and he had four tackles for loss in his career entering the game.

Jalen Milroe (Alabama) was designated as the Seahawks’ emergency third quarterback. Milroe could play only if Sam Darnold and Drew Lock could not.

Seahawks fullback Robbie Ouzts (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Seahawks cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett (Jackson, Auburn) made one tackle on special teams.

Seahawks nose tackle Jarran Reed (Alabama) made one tackle.

Seahawks linebacker Jamie Sheriff (South Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play. Texans cornerback Tremon Smith (Saks) returned six kickoffs for 154 yards.

Henry To’oTo’o (Alabama) started at linebacker for the Texans. To’oTo’o made two tackles on defense and one tackle on special teams.

Texans safety Jimmie Ward (Davidson) is on reserve/physically unable to perform and not eligible to play.

Seattle (5-2) is off during Week 8 of the NFL season. The Seahawks return to the field against the Washington Commanders at 7:20 p.m. CST Nov. 2 at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

Houston (2-4) plays the San Francisco 49ers at noon CDT Sunday at NRG Stadium in Houston.
