INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Police say an Indiana Pacers rookie charged with reckless driving told them he didn’t realize he was speeding because he was late for practice.
Kam Jones, 23, was arrested Monday after a brief chase on Interstate 65 in Indianapolis. He was drafted by the Pacers in the second round of this year’s NBA draft.
Indiana State Police say they tried to pull Jones over for driving erratically around 9:50 a.m., but he didn’t stop, instead leading them on a brief chase. According to court documents, a trooper clocked Jones’ car going 90 miles per hour as it passed his vehicle. The speed limit in that section of the interstate is 55 mph.

When Jones did eventually stop, he reportedly told police he “did not know he was speeding and was running late for practice for the Indiana Pacers.” He has been charged with reckless driving and resisting law enforcement.
Jones has not yet played a game for the Pacers, as he is out with a back injury. He was expected to play for the Pacers G-League affiliate, the Noblesville Boom, when healthy.
In a statement, the Pacers said they were aware of the situation and “in the process of gathering additional information.”
