Tensions are rising between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid over multiple matters just a few days before the first El Clasico of the season.
The biggest issue seems to be La Liga’s plan to play the game between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami, USA – something that Real Madrid are staunchly opposing.
Real Madrid stars like Dani Carvajal and Thibaut Courtois have openly criticised the move, claiming that it ‘adulterates’ the competition.
Moreover, the Spanish capital club are understood to have written a formal letter to the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to look into the matter.
Laporta responds to Real Madrid opposition
Barcelona president Joan Laporta spoke to the media on Tuesday ahead of the official pre-match lunch before the team’s Champions League clash with Olympiacos.
During the chat, the Barça chief broke his silence on Real Madrid’s opposition of the game between Villarreal and the Blaugrana being played in the US.
“We’re already used to this. The Miami issue is fully agreed upon with LaLiga and
Villarreal. We see it as an opportunity to bring joy to the Barça fans in the United States and to promote Barça’s image in an interesting market,” he stated.
When asked about institutional relations with Real Madrid, Laporta was brief in his response, saying:
“They are what they are. Madrid are free to do whatever they want. We’re following the plan, which is to play the match on December 20 in Miami.”

On being asked about Courtois’ comments about the Negreira case and refereeing, Laporta chose not to respond.
On Flick, Barcelona vs Olympiacos
Meanwhile, Laporta also confirmed that Barcelona had filed an appeal to overturn Hansi Flick’s red card issued against Girona and hoped that they would be successful in their efforts.
“We have filed the appeal,” Laporta stated.
“I think this situation should be reviewed. There are arguments for reducing the sanction. We see it as disproportionate. The referees act as they can. The referee expected our coach’s reaction,” he added.
The Barcelona president shifted his focus to the team’s immediate goals, with the crucial game against Olympiacos coming up tonight, followed by the Clasico on Sunday.
“This week is important. We have a very important match today against Olympiacos. We need to win and play well. The way we won this weekend will help us regain our attitude,” he said.
“And then we’ll talk about the Clasico , which is the ultimate match. The lead is at stake, and that’s what matters.”
