La Liga star criticises decision to stage Villarreal vs. Barcelona in Miami

More criticism has been directed at La Liga following the league's decision to stage a domestic match between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami.

The two clubs will play at Hard Rock Stadium on December 20, with Villarreal being the designated home side for the league fixture.

The upcoming match, which was approved by UEFA earlier this month, will be the first ever European league game to be held on foreign soil.

Protests against the decision took place this past weekend at the start of La Liga matches, with players remaining still for the opening 15 seconds of some matches.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong recently voiced his opposition to his side competing in Miami, labelling the move "not fair in terms of competition" due to Villarreal having to play a home game on a neutral site.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is also against his side travelling to Miami in two months, with him and his players "not happy" about the situation.

La Liga star hits out at league game being played abroad

The latest key figure to speak out against the staging of Villarreal vs. Barcelona in Miami is Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgian spoke on the topic ahead of his side's Champions League game against Juventus on Wednesday night (October 22), and he also took issue with a team playing a home game in a neutral venue.

"La Liga does whatever it wants because it suits them. This decision distorts the competition," the 33-year-old stated.

"Playing at home is not the same as playing away. In La Liga, playing away is very difficult. It's not fair to change the rules mid-season without consulting us."

The keeper feels that La Liga has not gone about the decision the right way in comparison to other sports leagues.

"The NBA has 82 games, and the NFL's owners collectively approve these decisions (to stage games on foreign soil). Here, La Liga acts unilaterally. It's not the same," Courtois added.

Such public opposition to La Liga's controversial fixture alteration means it could prove difficult for the league to stage future games abroad.
