Graham Potter will succeed as Sweden manager

Graham Potter has controversially been announced as the new manager of the Swedish national team, just weeks after leaving West Ham.

The 50-year-old was sacked by West Ham last month and has now entered the world of international management for the first time in his career.

Potter rose to prominence as a manager during his spell at Swedish club side Östersunds FK between 2011 and 2018, and now returns to Scandanavia to manage the side ranked 40th in the world.

The former Brighton & Chelsea boss won only 6 of his 23 Premier League games as Hammers manager before being replaced by Nuno Espírito Santo in September.

He replaces Jon Dahl Tomasson as head coach and admitted that “The opportunity to help a country that’s so close to my heart … is incredibly exciting”.

Sweden are in a state at the moment, they are at a huge risk of not qualifying for the World Cup next summer. They have just one point from four matches in their World Cup qualifying group.

Potter will be hoping his horrific form from West Ham doesn’t continue in a yellow shirt as they have to win their next two matches to have any chance of making it to USA, Canada and Mexico.

As bad as Potter was in East London, there’s no way he won’t improve the team because they’ve been awful. He should undoubtedly get more out of Premier League stars like Isak, Gyokeres, Elanga and Bergvall.

The former Chelsea and Brighton manager did this first press conference as Sweden head coach in fluent Swedish and he cannot wait to get started in his new job.

Potter’s first competitive game in charge will be on November 15, when Sweden take on Switzerland in a UEFA World Cup Qualifying match.
