Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash is reportedly set to sign a new contract after an agreement in principle was reached between the two sides on new terms.
The 28-year-old has firmly established himself as a fundamental figure in the Villa side since arriving from Nottingham Forest in 2020, as he’s gone on to make 191 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals and providing 12 assists to go with his defensive work.
Cash has remained a regular fixture in the starting line-up under Unai Emery and played a key role for the Basque coach in that right-back position, and despite the club signing younger options in the past couple of years, the Polish international has fended off the competition and kept his place in the team.

Albeit injuries and dips in form have raised question marks at times, he has been a consistent and reliable presence for Villa over the past few years, as now according to The Athletic, he could be set to be rewarded with a new contract as an agreement in principle is said to have been reached between the club and player.
It’s reported that Cash could put pen to paper on a new deal that keeps him at Villa until 2029, with the option of extending for a further 12 months, with his previous deal set to expire in 2027 as an announcement to confirm the contract is touted for this week once the deal has been finalised.
Further, the report also notes that John McGinn is close to signing a new deal to extend his stay at the club too, and so the Villa hierarchy are evidently prioritising the current core of the squad and keeping them in place moving forward as results continue to improve on the pitch after a difficult start to the season.
It could have been argued during that slump that Villa had perhaps leaned too heavily on the nucleus of Emery’s squad too long and haven’t added sufficient reinforcements to maintain our progress, but recent results and performances would suggest that the current crop still have plenty left in the tank, and hopefully new contracts will not only reward them, but lead to ongoing improvement this season and beyond.
