Now he could set a new outright record back at Old Trafford.
The two 37-goal hauls for the Seagulls were set in very different times but the players have a lot in common.
Welbeck went level with Robinson with his winner against Newcastle.
He has played 147 games for the Seagulls in the Premier League, of which 103 were starts.
Robinson made 113 First Division appearances, of which 111 were starts.
Different times indeed – with just one substitute in Robinson’s day and up to five in-game changes during Welbeck’s career.
Robinson was only ever taken off twice while Welbeck has been replaced on 64 occasions.
[Transfermarkt.com](http://Transfermarkt.com) have Robinson down as playing 10,020 minutes for his 37 goals.
That makes for an average of 271 minutes per goal.
Welbeck averages 248 minutes per goal but it is worth highlighting that he plays for a side who, other than the first two-thirds of 1981-82, are higher up the table than Robinson and contemporaries were.
There are similarities in that both were or are team players, not just goal-poachers.
Former Albion and Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson said of his team-mate: "He wasn't a (Ian) Rush or a (Kenny) Dalglish, he was Michael Robinson, and he played a big part for us during that treble season.
"I used to call him 'The Wall'. What he was very good at was holding the ball up and causing central defenders all sorts of problems. They couldn't have a moment's peace against him and he always played to his strengths.
"If you asked Rushy or Kenny, they appreciated the fact that he would hold the ball up extremely well and move the team up the pitch. It got us out of our half and into the opposition half so we could pressure them."
After signing for £400,000 from Manchester City, Robinson scored his first goal for Albion in his fourth game, against West Brom.
He scored 19 in 1980-81, winning player of the season by a landslide as Albion narrowly escaped relegation.
Then came 11 in 1981-82, as quite a dour side managed by Mike Bailey finished 13th having flirted with a UEFA Cup place for a while.
Robinson added seven in the relegation season of 1982-83, the last of them in a 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool.
He went on to hit the winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday and the picture of him celebrating after that game in front of the packed Clock End is the one we have used here.
But he did not score in any of his final eight league games for the club before moving to Liverpool.
Robinson, who went on to play for Osasuna and enjoy a successful career in the Spanish media, died during lockdown in April, 2020, at the age of 61.
Welbeck joined the club as a free agent six months later.
He made his debut as a sub in a defeat at Spurs and scored his first goal, at Aston Villa, in his third outing for the club.
He has officially played 9,162 minutes for Albion in the league.
With more to come and an outright record to claim.
