Wolverhampton Wanderers could be set to make a controversial call as their Premier League struggles continue

Wolverhampton Wanderers are rooted to rock-bottom of the Premier League as we near late October, and it is beginning to look apparent that this will be a season of struggle for the West Midlands side.

Wolves have been an established Premier League side ever since their promotion in 2018, never appearing to be close to relegation during that time. Even last campaign when they were in the bottom four for large stretches of the campaign, the weakness of the newly-promoted sides relative to the rest of the division meant it was always likely Wanderers would pull away.

This time, things are not so certain, and there may need to be drastic measures on and off the pitch.

Wolves could sack Vitor Pereira due to ‘hidden’ contract clause

Just a few months on, Pereira’s job could be in danger if things do not drastically improve soon. According to reports by Football Insider, there is a possibility that a hidden termination fee exists in the Portuguese’s new contract, which was signed just last month in what appeared to be a vote of confidence by the Wolves board. The reality is that it could now be even easier for the club to part ways with the head coach, should they make that decision in the coming weeks.

The belief is that the board do not intend to sack Pereira yet, but his severance fee is said not to be vastly different from the amount written into his previous contract, according to a previous report. With that in mind, it is all down to whether the 57-year-old can turn things around on the pitch.

‘Inevitable’ - Burnley and Fulham games crucial to Pereira’s future

Former Manchester United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the sacking of Pereira could prove “inevitable” if Wolves do not win in their next two games.

“Those games against Burnley and Fulham are must-win for Wolves,” said Brown. “The problem is, Fulham and Burnley will be thinking the same thing about playing Wolves, so it’s not going to be simple for them by any means.

“Wolves have been really poor this season, and they’re starting off as most people’s favourites for relegation because of the inconsistency and instability there. Questions will be asked of the manager there, because no manager in the world can go eight games without winning and avoid any pressure. Of course the players deserve some criticism as well, but ultimately it falls on the manager.

“So they two games they’ve got coming are massive for their season. If they can pick up two wins, they’ll narrow that gap to their rivals, but if they lose then all of a sudden there will be a massive gap left between them. That often results in the manager being sacked, because something’s got to change, and if they lose against Burnley at home I think it’s inevitable.”
