The NBA regular season tips off Tuesday, but it doesn’t sound like Robert Williams III will suit up for the Trail Blazers. The big man revealed a few weeks ago during Portland’s media day that he wasn’t cleared for full contact yet.
However, Blazers coach Chauncey Billups had a positive injury update, saying Williams practiced Monday. He wasn’t sure about his availability for opening night as the Blazers host the Timberwolves on Wednesday. Still, it’s a positive sign that Williams practiced and was on the court.
“You know it’s tough,” Williams said at media day. “Injuries aren’t easy for anyone. As soon as I’m back on the court moving and feeling like my old self, it goes away. I’ve been through a couple injuries. I know the ins and outs. I learned that you can’t do it alone. That’s when you start going the other way.”
Williams has been slowed down by injuries significantly throughout his career, including in Portland. He’s played in just 26 games over the past two seasons since getting traded from the Celtics to the Blazers. Williams was shut down at the end of the season as he had a procedure on his left knee to address inflammation.
Portland seemingly isn’t counting on Williams much as Donovan Clingan is projected to be the starter at center. The Blazers’ first-round pick this season, Yang Hansen, also has some potential while Duop Reath is a depth guy. So it remains to be seen what Williams’ role with the team will be when he is healthy and back on the court.
Williams was in trade rumors last season as he was a luxury piece for Portland. He could garner trade interest from center-needy teams. Williams has one year and $13.3 million left on his contract, so he’s also on an expiring deal. But any rumors will depend on if Williams can stay healthy or not.
