Manchester United are preparing to enter the race for Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson.

The 22-year-old midfielder has become a sought-after talent following his impressive breakthrough into the England team, attracting attention from Manchester City and Chelsea. Anderson, who will turn 23 next month, is considered one of the brightest prospects in English football.

Now, the Mirror report that his performances have caught the eye of United, who are keen to bolster their midfield options. The club has also been linked with Brighton's Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace's promising English player Adam Wharton.

However, Anderson, who made his England debut in September and has since earned four senior caps, is particularly admired by United. He is viewed as a strong contender to start in next year's World Cup.

Newcastle sold Anderson for £35m last year in a move that was seen as a significant loss but necessary to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules. Since then, his progress as a defensive midfielder and his ability to make forward runs have been remarkable.

Nottingham Forest would undoubtedly be keen to retain such a valuable asset and would resist selling him despite the increasing interest. Anderson is currently estimated to be worth around £75m.

Manchester City are also looking to strengthen their midfield as Rodri struggles to regain full fitness. Chelsea, known for their successful acquisitions of young English talent, are also well equipped in this area.

United splashed out more than £200m during the summer transfer window on attacking reinforcements Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. However, a late attempt to sign Baleba from Brighton was knocked back, demonstrating United's desire for a midfield overhaul.

They are seeking better balance in the centre of the park and could bring in two new faces, with Bruno Fernandes attracting attention elsewhere whilst Casemiro's deal expires this summer. Anderson remains tied to Forest until June 2029 and would not come cheap.

He has become an integral figure for the side, completing the full 90 minutes in all 10 of Forest's Premier League and Europa League fixtures this campaign.

United approached Brighton regarding Baleba's availability during the summer window, but the approach was swiftly rebuffed as the Seagulls held firm on their asking price.

"I don't think Baleba was a saga," Brighton owner Tony Bloom told The Argus recently. "There was interest from Manchester United, and we said that he wasn't available this summer and they went away. So we've had many bigger sagas in the past.

"But Carlos Baleba, his improvement has been immense. Massively important player to this football club, and just delighted that he's with us for this season."
