Man United won 2-1 against rivals Liverpool on Sunday at Anfield, which is the Reds’ fourth defeat in a row.

However, yet again, Harry Maguire was there to net the winner from a header, one of several last-minute winners that the English defender has produced during his time at Old Trafford. The goal will certainly go down as one of the best United moments of the season come the end of the year.

Maguire earned an 8/10 rating in ManchesterWorld’s match ratings over the weekend, as he didn’t just score the winner, but helped the Red Devils to contain a Liverpool side, who have scored just one fewer goal than league leaders Arsenal so far this season.

Harry Maguire included in Troy Deeney’s Premier League Team of the week

After his excellent performance against Arne Slot’s side on Sunday, Maguire has received a lot of praise, including from former Premier League striker Troy Deeney, who handed Maguire a place in his Team of the Week for BBC Sport.

Deeney said: “Man of the weekend. He was absolutely unreal in the 2-1 win at Liverpool. How many times has this man been written off, both as a player for England, as a captain for Manchester United?

“If you listen to everything, he has been the problem apparently; however, he was fantastic. A real leader, nothing too fancy, and that is what you want from your centre-backs. He was effective and very good.”

Maguire started alongside Matthijs De Ligt and Luke Shaw in a back three, with Amorim deciding that he should start ahead of Leny Yoro due to his experience, and the choice certainly paid off for the United manager.

Maguire’s place could be under threat amid injury return

After an excellent outing against Liverpool, you would expect Amorim to start Maguire against Brighton in their next game at Old Trafford next weekend; however, there is the potential for centre-back Lisandro Martinez to return for the game after an eight-month absence with an ACL injury.

He is close to resuming full training with the club and is currently being assessed ahead of the Brighton game on Saturday. Amorim said last week: “Licha is near but almost returning to the training with the team.”

There is a chance that he could feature against the Seagulls, which could come as a blow for Maguire, as the English centre-back would likely be dropped over someone like Matthijs De Ligt, who has been one of United’s best players so far this season.

However, Amorim is more likely to ease Martinez back in due to the severity of his injury, so Maguire is probably more likely to start against Brighton, but, he could lose his spot in the starting XI after that due to Martinez’s return.
