Raptors rule out 2 1st-round picks for season opener vs. Hawks due to injuries, illness

The Toronto Raptors won't quite be at full strength for their season opener.

When the Raptors begin the 2025-26 NBA regular season on Wednesday night in Atlanta against the Hawks, they'll be down two players.

The Raptors announced on Tuesday that rookie Collin Murray-Boyles will miss the season opener with a right forearm strain.

They also announced that Ja'Kobe Walter is out due to an illness.

Murray-Boyles is the big bummer on this absence list.

The 20-year old forward was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

He hurt his elbow in the penultimate preseason game, then didn't play in the Raptors' preseason finale.

In the preseason, Murray-Boyles averaged 6.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.

Walter is also an annoying absence for Toronto as he tries to take a step up this season.

The Raptors took Walter No. 19 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft. He played in 52 games last season and averaged 8.6 points per contest.

Walter was going to be part of an intriguing bench rotation of wings, but he'll have to heal up before he gets to take part in that role.

The Raptors have all their big names healthy, it appears, so they'll have a chance to get off to a strong start against a Hawks team that has high hopes for this new season.
